History of South Africa
South Africa is one of the most diverse, enchanting countries in the world. Officially known as the Republic of South Africa, it has a population of 52 million people, people of different origins, cultures, languages and religions. Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa; however, Cape Town is the legislative capital, Pretoria the administrative capital and Bloemfontein is the judicial capital. South Africa has 11 official languages, nine of which are domestic. Many blacks speak Afrikaans, the first language of about 60% whites and mixed race, or English. South Africa has the continent’s largest and most developed economy.
South Africa’s Economy
Being ranked as an upper-middle income economy by the World Bank, South Africa is considered to be a newly industrialized country. South Africa is becoming increasingly influential and an economic powerhouse for Africa with a gross domestic product (GDP) of more than 400 billion. South Africa’s economy is stable with GDP growth rates of about 2.8 percent and future expectations are to exceed at least 4 percent over the next five years (South Africa's Competitive Edge).
In addition, South Africa serves as a financial and business hub for the continent. Amid the global economic downturn; South Africa’s banking sector has remained stable. Proving, it has a sound business infrastructure. (South Africa’s Tourism Report)
Tourism in South Africa
Approximately, 860,000 arrivals travel to South Africa per month and around 210,000 are from foreign tourism. Revenue equaling between 1% and 3% of GDP is generated by the tourism industry. With all the different businessmen and natives passing through we need to be able to serve everything from a simple hamburger, to sushi, to potjiekos (South African dish). It is imperative for the hotel to be customizable to the many different potential customers.
On the whole, South Africa has an attractive economy because it is the budding business and financial hub for Africa; along, with rising numbers in leisure and business travelers. Entry into the market through licensing is the least risky and lowest-cost option and but carries a high brand risk. However, focusing on customer service as the core competence is advantageous. This will give the firm a competitive edge over the competition, along with being elastic to change.
