If I were to describe a fictional character that has had an influence on my life, that character would be Harrison Bergeron. This dystopian short-story protagonist shows that even in a world build for equality, there is still individuality. He wants to prove that you should not change who you are for anyone even at the cost of your own life. The story is entertaining because the reader can easily empathize with Harrison’s ideas. Harrison was exceptional at everything, making the reader want to be like him. A key point the author makes using Harrison’s life is that you have to overcome obstacles to become successful and nothing is given for free. The story also has an entertainment value to it. While there is a great moral principle to go with the character’s endeavors, it also is just a well-written story. In my opinion, it is something everyone should try to be. Instead of trying to be good at all things, however, you should try to be exceptional at something that you are naturally good at. This view on life has simply made life make sense to me. Without this story, I am certain I would not be the person I am today. He illustrates the simple fact that the thing that makes us human is our personalities. Our faults and our blessings are what make us who we are. Without these traits, we are bland, banal, boring, and most of all, uninteresting. Another key theme of Harrison Bergeron’s life was the ability to overcome obstacles in order to achieve goals. This is especially prevalent in most works of fiction, however, I believe it was elucidated particularly well in this story. It is because of this execution that I was influenced to also strive to overcome anything in my way in order to achieve personal goals.
