Firefighter EMTs can have duties that include firefighting, victim rescue and fire prevention education. An EMT's training allows them to respond to medical and trauma emergencies, to care for patients, administer medications and provide treatments to those in need. Firefighter EMTs have the training to extricate victims from wrecked vehicles and treat their injuries while transporting the victims to the emergency room. When not on the scene of an emergency, firefighters work at fire stations, where they sleep, eat, and remain on call during shifts of twenty-four hours. Many work over forty hours per week. The work can be very dangerous.
As a little kid, I was always fascinated with fire trucks and firemen. I guess many would say what little boy isn't? But now that I am a teenager that fascination has turned into a real, genuine and true interest. The idea of being able to help people, save a person's life, protect and save their belongings and treasures, is what genuinely peaks my interest and desire to become a firefighter. I am going to look into joining the Explorers for the St. Lucie County Fire Rescue.
Potential firefighters only need a high school diploma before applying. But, more and more fire departments are now requiring a two year associates degree in fire science or fire prevention. And, as part of my research, I learned that a bachelor's degree in fire science may greatly improve an applicant's chances for a job.
Indian River State College has a Fire Science Technology program, which is a two-year program. The Fire Science program leads to an Associate Degree and prepares students for careers in fire services. Higher level schooling increases their technical knowledge and ability, and prepare us for career advancemen...

As I get older, I will now know to look into the following organizations for potential scholarships: Professional associations (International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), etc.); St. Lucie County Fire Rescue Department; Large corporations (Pepsi, Xerox, etc.); Unions, etc.
I intend to work hard to get myself in peak physical shape and also work hard on all my testing and schooling as doing this research has shown me that the "best" will be chosen for all job openings. So even though pursuing a career as a firefighter/EMT may not seem easy at all, I know that the hard work, drive and perseverance will pay off when I become a St. Lucie County firefighter/EMT. Who knows, maybe someday I'll be the one helping to minimize the personal damage to your home, or more importantly, your life!
