Everyone experiences stress in their lifetime. Studies have shown that there are four maintypes of stress; Eustress, Distress, Hyperstress, and Hypostress. “Eustress is a type of short term stress that is a positive type of stress. This stress provides the focus and energy needed in order to perform at the highest level of the individual’s ability” (Michael Wright). Eustress helps people to accomplish things like giving a speech or winning at something competitive. “Distress is a negative stress brought about by changes or alterations in an individual’s life” (Michael Wright). However, studies done by the University of Wisconsin-Madison try to disprove the health effects associated with stress. They are trying to prove that it is the perception of stress that does the most damage rather than stress itself. Regardless of their studies, what we do know is that “the autonomic nervous system plays an important role in translating stress into a response” and “ the immune system may be heavily influenced by stress” (Wikipedia). Proving that many biologicalsystems play an active role in the cause and effects of stress.So, what are the health effects of stress being studied? “Stress can play a part in problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety” (WebMD). While some of these symptoms seem far-fetched many of the psychological symptoms have been proven to be increased or triggered by stress such as depression, anxiety, and headaches. “The lifetime prevalence of an emotional disorder is more than 50% often due to chronic, untreated stress reactions” (WebMD). Many times stress and psychological issues are misdiagnosed because of their, almost identical, symptoms.How can people manage stress to reduce its effects? I am a single mother, which alone can be overly stressful when trying to make sure both of my children’s needs are met. I am also a full time student and primary provider for my household, so learning to cope with stressors was a necessity. Before learning how to cope with stress, I was medicated by a professional and diagnosed with depression and anxiety. The medications seemed to just make me not care about the stress in my life, rather than helping me to cope with them, so I removed myself from these medications and took action.The diagnosis of depression and anxiety were not entirely false, however medications ended up being the wrong answer. Much like what was explained earlier in this paper; myunmanaged stress was an enhancer or a trigger for my depression and anxiety. After doing a bitof research I began exercising and spending more time on trying to recognize when stress was playing a role in my mental health. I still suffer from symptoms of my psychological issues, butno longer do I suffer from chronic stress which enhanced my mental inadequacies.Upon learning how to manage my stress I have found that dealing with the hyperstressors of my life, such as deadlines for school, do not make me anxious. I have also found that my psychological issues do not grow to extremes as often, though I’m still learning how to cope withmy hypostressors which still takes its toll on me.
