Prejudice, Stereotypes, and Discrimination
We all live with prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination every day of our lives because these inborn characteristic come not only from the way we take in and process information but also the world that surrounds us (Feenstra, 2013). Although we sometimes unknowingly hold these characteristic we can work hard to reduce the way we react towards others who are not within the same group which we are. Through our interactions with others we can certainly form the groups that lead us to practice stereotypes; show discriminatory actions toward individuals outside of our groups; and become a part of societies that, purposely, support prejudice and discrimination. We base these interpretations on their fitting in a certain group. These views can be constructive, damaging or unbiased. We base these opinions on an individual’s sexual category, background, or profession in many of today’s cultures. There has been research that specified that stereotypes of certain groups include the certainty that it is a sickness over which “people have some control and one whose risk factors include sociocultural, physical, family, behavioral and personality variables” (Stewart, Schiavo, Herzog, & Franko, 2008).More or less scholars might go into college with defined stereotypes about ethnic and national groups that effect their dealings with individuals. We stereotype many individuals and groups in the wrong way. We daily hear this type of stereotypes such as: “Muslims are terrorists, Asians are good at Math, Mexicans are illegal immigrants, Jews are industrious and accumulate money, and blondes are unintelligent (but have more fun), and teenagers wearing baggy clothes can’t be trusted” (Heiden, Harpel, 2013).Stereotypes is predetermined simplifications concerning a certain group. Individuals practice stereotypes by collecting facts through societal thought and communication or through indirect explanations of connections. Discrimination is grounded on opinions and outlooks about dissimilar groups or individuals (Feenstra, 2013) . People are discriminated against everyday based on their sex, race, and social class. Discrimination can be very depressing to an individual. When an individual discriminate against another it does not come only from the way which they perceive that person or group to be but also based on the way they take in and process information concerning the world around them.Discrimination involves the customs in the world around us, the struggle that occurs among groups, and the public discrimination that occur in the world.This is so often selected in our shared groups.
