You might guess it’s a custom dreamed up by a modern-day, real-life Willy Wonka, but people have been chewing gum, in various forms, since ancient times. There’s evidence that some northern Europeans were chewing birch bark tar 9,000 years ago, possibly for enjoyment as well as such medicinal purposes as relieving toothaches. The ancient Maya chewed a substance called chicle, derived from the sapodilla tree, as a way to quench thirst or fight hunger, according to “Chicle: The Chewing Gum of the Americas” by Jennifer P. Mathews. The Aztecs also used chicle and even had rules about its social acceptability. Only kids and single women were allowed to chew it in public, notes Mathews. Married women and widows could chew it privately to freshen their breath, while men could chew it in secret to clean their teeth.
In North America, the Indians chewed spruce tree resin, a practice that continued with the European settlers who followed. In the late 1840s, John Curtis developed the first commercial spruce tree gum by boiling resin then cutting it into

one of the wealthiest men in America. Wrigley started out as a soap salesman in his native Philadelphia. After moving to Chicago in 1891, he began offering store owners incentives to stock his products, such as free cans of baking powder with every order. When the baking powder proved a bigger hit than the soap, Wrigley sold that instead, and added in free packs of chewing gum as a promotion. In 1893, he launched two new gum brands, Juicy Fruit and Wrigley’s Spearmint. Because the chewing gum field had grown crowded with competitors, Wrigley decided he’d make his products stand out by spending heavily on advertising and direct-marketing. In 1915, the Wrigley Company kicked off a campaign in which it sent free samples of its gum to millions of Americans listed in phone books. Another promotion entailed sending sticks of gum to U.S. children on their second
In 1928, an accountant, Walter Diemer, invented an improved version of bubble gum. The only food coloring he had on hand was pink, so for many years, pink was the common color of bubble gums. Diemer arranged to market the bubble gum in Philadelphia candy stores and the product became wildly popular with children. Fleer Company purchased the recipe, and named the product Dubble Bubble.
The Municipal Gum by Oodgeroo Noonuccal portrays the miserable, hopeless and despondent living conditions of the Aboriginal people. It expresses the feelings of the Indigenous people who are deprived and displaced from their native culture and native land by the white people. The general theme and the ideas addressed in this poem includes raising awareness of the tremendous discrimination and prejudice by white Australians against the aboriginal people. The discrimination is developed strongly within the content of the poem, with some imageries holding powerful messages and meanings. It can therefore be seen that the poem is about the tremendous discrimination by the white Australians towards the aboriginal people.
The Pecan tree is a native tree to North America. When early European settlers traveled across the sea to settle in the New World, they found pecan trees located in numerous places in this new land. Since then, the pecan tree has become one of the most important orchard species in terms of acreage. Indians began using pecans almost 8000 years ago in what is now Texas. The first budded pecan trees were produced in Louisiana in the mid-1800s and orchards have been established throughout the Southern states. The first recorded shipment of pecans to England was documented in 1761, by Spanish and European explorers (Anderson and Crocker, 2004). In 1917, a commercial shipment of pecans came out of Georgia and since then, Georgia has been the leading producer of pecans. Although Georgia is the leading producer, in some years collections of pecans from wild trees in Oklahoma and Texas surpass the production in Georgia.
Like most pregnancy related things, the likely cause of this is your hormones. Hormonal fluctuations that occur during pregnancy change the bacteria in your mouth and the way your body is able to manage them. These fluctuations increase the flow of blood to your gums and can make gums and teeth more sensitive. This may occur at any stage of pregnancy, most commonly, early in the second trimester.
I some of you are craving gum right now! Why shouldn’t students be able to chew gum at school? I think students should be able to chew gum at school because it has been scientifically proven that gum helps students focus. Chewing gum will send more oxygen to the brain and will improve memory. It will help during tests and just overall throughout the day.
People have been chewing gum for over centuries now during the Neolithic period, Ancient Greece where know to be the first in chewing a special type of gum following the Aztecs and Mayans. One of the forms these people would chew gum was from birch bark tar, people though there was a health benefit when chewing this tar. These people did not chew gum because of the amazing flavor but for cleansing their teeth. They thought if they would chew this tar their breath would not stink and their mouth would be cleaner. Nowadays we do chew gum for the amazing and thrilling taste. The first official gum was launched in the year 1848 by a man whose name was John B. Curtis the gum was officially called “The state of Maine Pure Spruce Gum”
In Middle School, before taking a big test teachers would always hand out peppermint or a piece of gum. The purpose behind this seemed unclear. However, from further research their was interesting facts about peppermint candy and Big Red cinnamon flavored gum. Peppermint candy is made with the oil of peppermint, which is extracted from the peppermint plant. This is why the candy can have some of the same effects as the oil itself. People believe the brain effects associated with peppermint are related to the scent of the peppermint, rather than the ingestion of it.
Have you ever got a wonderful stick of peppermint gum, where all of the flavors kept popping out at you, and it was like your taste buds were front row at a concert? While you were chewing your gum, it was like the flavor was endless, always coming back with more. However, while you are enjoying that magnificent piece of peppermint gum, have you ever got the sudden feeling that it was slowly sliding down your throat? At least everyone around the world has swallowed their gum. Many times it’s an accident, however, many people don’t know what truly happens when you swallow gum multiple times.
In the same experiment that was explained the participants that chewed gum had quicker reaction times and more accurate results closer to the end of the experiment. This is the case because the excess movement of the jaw increased their blood flow making them more attentive and that made them remember more sequences towards the end of the test when the other participants that didn’t. The other participants didn’t have the increased blood flow and towards the end of the test they were getting tired and their brain was foggy from remembering the earlier sequences and were mixing up the different numbers. This contemplates that if you are chewing gum it helps you pay more
Just the act of chewing bubble gum can help a person focus better because there is something therapeutic and meditative about it. Chewing gum can actually help increase memory power reflected by the studies that have shown that students who did it scored 35% higher than the ones who did not. This is because the act of chewing requires you to concentrate longer and chewing for at least 10-15 minutes per day will help improve your performance. Some studies suggest that participants who did not chew gum did better in the beginning, but the gum chewers surpassed them in the end. Chewing gum increases blood flow to the brain, which helps release stress and anxiety. So the next time your teacher or boss tells you to stop chewing gum, tell them that it benefits you, without risking getting kicked out of the class or fired.
How one’s poor hygienic habits and ignorance towards healthy gums physiologically impacts their oral health, will be analyzed in this paper. Active and healthy polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes contribute in the battle between your gums and the possibility of contagious infections or inflammation. However, when one is compromised, the other slowly deteriorates, which makes regions like your gums vulnerable. Consistent smoking without proper hygiene can stain your teeth with hardened plaque and tartar, causing inflammation in your gums, and thus marking the start of gingivitis. Without proper and strict care, the diagnosis soon advances to periodontitis, or inflammation around your teeth. Late gingivitis and early periodontitis are
Chewing gum helps you with concentration. Just like praying and reading the Bible helps you concentrate better on your lively hood with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 1 Timothy 4:13 say, “Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.” Just like you give your attention in school doing work, you should also give your undivided attention to God to pray, learn, and teach about Him. A good idea is to chew gum while you are reading the Bible and learning Gods scripture because it can help you focus better on your Lord
When we chew gum, we are basically chewing rubber. Gum started out as latex sap from a tree (the sapodilla). The tree grew in Central America, and the sap we chewed was called chicle. Chicle has the same properties as rubber, because it doesn’t break down when we chew it. Later, after World War II, scientists found a way to create something called synthetic rubber. Synthetic rubber is still similar to chicle because it still doesn’t break down when you chew it, but it isn’t natural like chicle is. (How Stuff Works, 2000… April 1st)
Dentistry is much older than most people realize and has an intriguing history. Early signs of dentistry can be traced back all the way to ancient Egypt and the Stone Age. If you loathe going to the dentist, be thankful you did not live in the Stone Age. Before the use of whiskey to dull pain and roughly 8,000 years before Novocain prehistoric patients would undergo painful procedures to repair their tremendously damaged teeth. “Our ancient ancestors were having holes drilled into their teeth with drill bits carved from stone. Scientists found eleven teeth from the skeletons of four females, two males and three individuals of unknown gender in an ancient cemetery in Pakistan that show signs of having undergone the painful procedure (Ring)”. Similar to the cavemen and people of today, ancient Egyptians were not spared from the dirty grasps of bad oral hygiene. Dentistry has come a long way since the times of cavemen and pharos. "Their diet, which was f...
Coca-Cola started out small in Atlanta, once as a Candler started the Coca-Cola company he " begun an active and innovative marketing campaign that spurred the wide distribution of Coke across the United States." Once he had this going he had to strategically plan on how to bottle his soft drink and get it ready for shipping. Once the product was bottled he had to plan on how his product would be distributed. "In 1899 the Coca-Cola company first signed a bottling contract, As a Candler did not believe bottling would be successful and sold the bottling rights to Benjamin Thomas and Joseph Whitehead." They successfully bottled the Coca-Cola product. Now that bottling and shipping the product wasn't the issue, Coca-Cola was shipped throughout the Un...
