Many students come to Howard University so that they can be the next ones listed on the long list of notable Alumni. Some of Howards Alumni have gone on to be the Attorney Generals, United State Senators, famous actors, doctors, lawyers etc. The list of notable alumni from the beloved Howard University can go on for days. In order to be the next one on that list Howard students must take advantage of every opportunity that they are given. One of those opportunities is through Howards many different career fairs. This past Tuesday, Howard University had their annual Spring Career Fair which was located in Blackburn Ballroom with over 50 different companies. The career fair at Howard is always an exciting time as students eagerly await the opportunity to earn a job either during summer or after the graduation. This year’s career fair featured such employers like Target, Johnson & Johnson, Bank of America, Emily’s List, Kipp DC, and many more different companies. Not only did the career fair feature a bunch of different job opportunities it also had representations from different graduate schools some of those were University of Maryland, Wake Forest University, University of Rochester, and many others. I went for the Career Network Event and it was a great learning experience for me. I went there trying to apply everything that I learned from my job search class and it was a success. Because I had the chance to speak to the employer of my interest, and I everything went as planned, I remember my professor in class told us to make sure we have a goal and to know which company that we would like to work for and just go for it. I went in there and I did the exact thing that he told us. I remember before taking this class I used to try to speak to every single one of employer and then I put everything in one folder. Later on when I went to contact the job that I was interested in, I would get all the employers mixed up and because of that, that cost me a lot of jobs that I always wanted in the past.
So with looking further into all of the different criminal justice paths I could go down and with my love for science I thought being a forensic scientist would be the perfect job. After I’m done with college, my successful will continue. Regardless my main goal is to just be happy, and never have to struggle for anything. But, when I think about my future the first thing I always think about is the car I want. Which is so odd because I should be thinking about a place to live, and a family maybe first, then a car. But no, I want my all white Cadillac CTS. Depending on what year I get enough money to purchase this perfect car, I’m going to want to the newest year. Just so I can have all the newest interior and the technology. I want to one day, have a family and a decent sized house in a big city. I haven’t really decided yet if I either want to go into the FBI or just work for the local police station wherever I decide to live.
In 2012 nearly 205,000 people were employed as a physical therapist in the United States. The average salary of a physical therapist in 2012 was $79,860 per year. The number of jobs is estimated to grow 36% from 2012-2022. This job of physical therapy involves many and very important tasks to fulfill the needs of their patients. It requires many different educational requirements and you must have strong people skills.
Life goes on as well as we moving on, in order to live a happy life, money, passion, happiness and the meaning of it are essential keys. Among thousands of jobs and over billions of people, having a career or achieving a job is not only important but also competitive. Therefore, deciding what you are going to become has always been the toughest decision in life. I am not talking about Mozart, who was born to play and compose music, or Cristiano Ronaldo who decided to pursue for his career as a football player at the age of 14. I am talking about me and my just-found-out-career in a couple hours earlier, Nursing.
First, colleges prepare many students with valuable contacts that they might one day use to acquire a job position. Jeff McGuire wrote an article, titled “College Internships,” explaining how building a network of “who you knows” through college student internships can pay great dividends upon graduation. It is these programs and people who may be the deciding factor if one gets the job or not. In addition, schools like to keep in touch with alums. Actually, most schools have specific departments dedicated to this purpose (McGuire). These departments help past students of a school receive jobs in the future.
If I had to look back at the elementary school version of myself and someone mentioned the word nurse to me my first thought was that is a girl’s profession. While I was interested in medicine I never knew much about the careers in medicine. I have two older brothers, one become a computer analyst the other a computer programmer and my father was a mechanical engineer. In addition, nobody in my family had been involved in the medical field so I had no one to turn to gain knowledge about careers in medicine. Naturally I wanted to follow in my family’s footsteps so I decided I wanted a career in technology.
Colleges offer many different opportunities such as internships, job fairs, and volunteer opportunities these wide variety of courses not only benefits the person in their career decision, but it helps guide them in towards their career goals. Upon graduating from high school, many students do not know what they want to accomplish in their life yet or what career path they want to take. So, being able to experience the many outlets that a college could give students in search of a career, that would better suit their style would benefit them enormously, because instead of wasting time going after a career they would not excel in, they would be able to pursue a career that they are passionate about. Before graduating college, over 80% of college students complete internships, giving them valuable employment experience before entering the job market (“College Education”). Internships offer many benefits: internships may help students to find jobs, be stepping stones that can be directly translated into full-time jobs, create experiences that motivate students to continue along a career path and create realistic expectations about the world of work and help clarify student’s possible career (Knouse and Fontenot 61).
I have been in the Navy for about three years now, before I was in the navy I worked at a community center as a lifeguard and swim instructor. I worked full time and went to high school, my motivation for getting my degree is I want to get my degree in business management so one day I can own my own bakery. I came to the goal of owning my own shop from being in the military actually, my I love baking and I love to decorate sweets as well. My younger brother also wants to own his own bakery so even if I don't ever open my own shop I would love to be able to help him on the business side of his shop. The national career development association (2003) defines career development as the absolute combination of psychological, Sociological, educational and economic factors which influence the significant of work in the total life span of any individual. It is a route through which individuals choose a career path or professional occupation, continue to develop it through their lives and have several major career change as personal needs and interests change.
As I gradually make my way through this semester, I have come to realize that I am called to go into Psychology. I love watching people and trying to figure out why they act the way that they do. I, also, love knowing that I have finally figured out what careers I want to pursue. I want to become either a clinical or counseling psychologist, which both have the same requirements for everything – majors , classes, ect. So, I do not have to decide right off the bat on which career I want to pursue. Since I am planning on majoring in Psychology, I decide to do some research on my own, as well as go to a major’s fair hosted at the IU Southeast campus.
With all the independence and freedom that recent high school graduates possess, they should carefully ponder the possible options that exist. Through abiding by the “check the destination before the ticket is purchased” adage, high school graduates can competently guide their personal journeys in college life or the real world. Regardless of the path chosen, college students and those who immediately enter the workforce will ultimately decide their future destinations. In addition, while graduates pursue their dreams, goals must be set and diligently fostered. The necessity of a college and/or career game plan is crucial, and should not be disregarded. Before Dr. King ended his “I Have a Dream” speech he declared, “Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.” Similarly, high school graduation is not a finish line, but a starting gun.
Health care would be a great career option for almost anyone because one can help a multitude of different people. Health care includes many well paying jobs and the field is growing rapidly, so job security is promising. Not choosing health careers would be a missed opportunity because there are many promising benefits in the field.
