What does it mean to be black in America? My life is not valued the same as a white man nor women. The law said we are equal, but are we really? Due to recent event in the past few years “black live matter” became the movement. It signifies unity and courage in the black communities. Due to the movement it has caused tension in our country. There are people who would agree with the movement and there are people who believe the movement is appalling.
The black lives matter movement was caused because of institutional racism and implicit bias (Chapple, Jacinto, Harris-Jackson, and Vance 2017). Institutional racism refers to schools, organization or business that makes decisions based on race (Chapple, Jacinto, Harris-Jackson, and Vance 2017). Implicit bias relates to our attitudes and stereotypes (Chapple, Jacinto, Harris-Jackson, and Vance 2017). In the year of 2015 Dylann Roof a 21-year-old white male killed a mass of black people in their church. Based on from what I seen and experienced, racism is still here and now that we have improved technology we can catch people in the act. There was a time when I went shopping and I went in a high end store. As soon as I stepped foot into the store, the security guard there stared me down as if I came to steal. It doesn’t matter if I’m a black man or women it’s the fact that I’m black. Implicit bias is very real and prevalent to today society. The second article was an opinion based on what he knows and sees. It’s not because of our provocations that causes black people to have disdain towards the police. It’s because of cases like Freddie Gray, Sandra Bland, Miriam Carey, and Kelly Thomas that black people are hurt and angry.
