Have you ever made a connection between an author and their work just by doing a little research? Researching things like the significance of that work being published in that time, or the background of that author can reveal many of connections. Author, Kate Chopin, was a firm believer in women’s rights and she used her own life experiences to write her stories. “The Story of an Hour,” and “The Storm,” both are proof that she uses her work to voice her opinion on women’s desire for social, economic, and political equality. Mrs. Mallard, the protagonist or main character, was the wife of Mr. Mallard and she had a heart condition. When the news came that her husband died, her sisters made sure they delivered the news to her in a cautious manner; the news was that her husband died in a tragic train accident. Initially, she was heartbroken about the news, but she then concluded she would be able to experience happiness. Mrs. Millard was overcome with grief, but afterwards all she could whisper is, “Free! Body and soul free!” (Chopin, “Story of an Hour” 354). For the first time since her marriage, she will feel free again. She started to notice things outside of her window that hadn’t before. Unfortunately for Mrs. Mallard, towards the end of the story she finds out that her husband wasn’t dead. The news was so shocking that it killed her. She then knew that her happiness wouldn’t no longer live, if she was with him. The irony is that her family had no idea that she was glad about him passing, but instead thought that she was overly sad and felt a sense of loneliness. Her death was more of shock than disappointment; the ending phrase explained that she died, “of joy that kills” (Chopin, “Story of an Hour”
