A Study of Emigration of Singaporeans
1. Introduction
The new paper (More than half , 2012) released an article stating that a Mindshare survey carried out early this year found that 56 per cent of the 2,000-odd polled agreed or strongly agreed that given a choice they would migrate. So why is this happening? Why do so many Singaporeans want to migrate to other countries and not stay in Singapore? Another scenario, Davis, who was a torchbearer in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, also left Singapore for Australia. Reasons for Singaporeans migrating
I will be talking about three reasons on why Singaporeans are migrating overseas. 2.1 Life Overseas
Firstly, many Singaporeans believe that oversea life is better than in Singapore. Singaporeans felt that studying abroad gives them an opportunity to discover themselves while gaining understanding of different cultures also testing the ability of the student to adapt to diverse situations while being able to solve problems. They also felt that they can be explorers of a new nation and discover the curiosity and excitement that they harbor. (10 Benefits to Studying Abroad, n.d.)
2.2 Working overseas
Next, Singaporeans who worked overseas mentioned that they acquired skill sets abroad that influenced their career path and also gave them interest in different career paths. The Straits Time (Gain overseas exposure to compete for top management posts, Chun Sing urges, 2015) also mentioned that Singaporeans also migrate overseas as they wanted the overseas experience and exposure as companies currently want to hire people with global and regional perspective.

As a result, Singapore will experience a brain drain because more talented people in each sector of the economy would have migrated to other countries. This will affect Singapore’s economy heavily as there will be lesser competent people left in Singapore thus weakening the economy as a result. Furthermore, a study of Emigration Attitude of Young Singaporeans by Leong and Soon (Soon & Leong, 2010) suggests, that there is an increasing amount if Singaporeans planning to leave Singapore to work and leave in overseas which will worsen the brain drain issue in Singapore even
