Throughout both Electra and Hamlet, viewers bear testament to the execution of justice and revenge by the individuals who feel they have been wronged. The writers of both texts convey this fight for justice and revenge through the careful portrayal of the characters’ psychological state. In the film Electra, viewers cannot help but be faced with the protagonist’s depressed and wallowing state. The circumstances surrounding Electra’s marriage to a peasant, the death of her father – the King, and her brother’s exile lead Electra’s down a spiralling path of anguish and misery. He makes sure that he does things logically, precisely and in a stable state of mind, despite the façade of madness he exuded. His attempt to be level minded in the planning of his revenge against Claudius is evident in the many months which pass before Hamlet kills Claudius. Hamlet recognised that his judgement may-be skewed due to his loss, so he enlists Horatio’s help to bring an element of objectivity and logic by independently looking at the situation of King Hamlet’s death and Claudius’s domineer. On the contrary, Electra’s state of mind hider her judgement causing her to act out in passion and anger. The betrayal of her mother in killing Agamemnon with Aegisthus hindered her logic and rationale to the extent that she convinces her brother to be an accomplice to the murder of their step-father. She then strongly pressures her brother help her to fully carry out her revenge, by butchering their mother. Despite her brother’s objection, they still proceed with Electra’s plan of committing such an unnatural and heinous crime. The audience sees that she convinces Orestes to kill their mother by reminding him that Clytemnestra killed their father with her
