Internal Conflict In Hamlet

Hamlet is a story about a prince who wants revenge on the new king for killing his father. Most people believe that revenge and the events drive the story, but Hamlet’s plot and actions are driven based on the conflicts between two characters and themselves. Their conflicts affect more than themselves, it also affects other characters within the story and the audience reading the story, making it hard for the reader to cheer for a character and want them to succeed but yet at the same time forcing them to continue to read to solve their own conflict. Even though conflict is the major backbone to the plot both the theme or revenge and other events have a strong case of why they are the actual reasons the plot development and not conflict. The
Internal conflicts are people’s true emotions and conscience like Hamlet, performing to be mad and losing a sense of reality (Shakespeare, 43). Claudius who is dealing with the guilt of killing Old Hamlet (Shakespeare, 184). Other characters, like Ophelia, also have internal conflicts. She is so depressed from her father’s death that when she fell into the lake and she was oblivious to the fact that she was drowning. From this it is believed that she committed suicide.. From a very Christian based society, to commit suicide would be extreme, showing her deep grief (Madelaine, 3). Besides internal conflicts there are also external conflicts. The major external conflict is between Hamlet and. Claudius. This is an intense conflict and because of that is is one of the dominant objects that drive the actions in the play. The conflict is that Hamlet wants to kill Claudius when he learns from the Ghost that Claudius killed his father (Shakespeare, 39). Claudius wants Hamlet to be dead and/or out of Denmark because Claudius knows that Hamlet understands what he has done. Claudius
Most people believe that in the case of Hamlet it is actually the theme of revenge that causes the story to move forward. I do agree that revenge does have an effect of the story, but not as strong as conflict does. An example is the plot follows the battle of Hamlet and Claudius. Hamlet wants revenge on Claudius killing his father (Shakespeare, 39). Claudius wants Hamlet out of the picture by any way possible before that kid spoils his plan. That conflict, that revenge, that fight between them causes events like people dying or Hamlet gets shipped away. So while revenge is the theme of the story, conflict caused the revenge. Revenge is the backbone to the plot, but conflict is the base for revenge therefor conflict is what makes up the plot. The other main influence on the plot is the plot itself. What I mean by the plot affecting plot is that, events that have happened in the past and the ones that are currently happening are the reason for events that will occur in the future. An example is Claudius killing Old Hamlet (Shakespeare, 39). This conflict causes everything else to happen in the play. That causes the revenge theme to become a thing. Another example is further down the road is how Hamlet dealt with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (Shakespeare, 242). Also how Hamlet dealt with Laertes. All of those events that had influenced other events down the road where caused by conflicts
