The painter that I will be talking about is Edward Munch. He was born on December 12, 1863. He is best known as being a newborn expressionist painter and printer. He was born in Christiana Norway also known as Oslo. He was related to famous painters so it was in his blood. A few years after Edward was born, his mother passed of tuberculosis. He was raised in a single parent household with his dad. His father raised his brothers and sisters in a strict household. This might explain why Edward’s artwork had a strong tone. The painting that actually caught my eye was called “Two Woman on the Shore.” I see two distinct women. One woman is very dark and looks evil, kind of like the Grim Reaper, while the other woman is dressed in a white
This particular painting is classified as a piece from the Impressionism era and was in the Impressionism section of the St. Louis Art Museum. The painting showed an up close view of a boy whose face could be seen. It looked as if he could have been walking right out of the painting. It looks to me as if his hands are behind is back in a cutesy way. He might be hoping or wishing for something. There was also a woman whose back was turned towards the audience. She was carrying an umbrella to block her from the sun maybe. Or there might even be rain coming as depicted by the gray sky above. There is also a bridge behind them. There seems to be some type of atmospheric perspective in this painting.

The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.
The right side is almost purely white, with blue and gray shadows; the rest of the body is black, dark brown, and navy. The profile of a white woman obscures the left half of the black face, facing to the right of the piece; her hair is in a large braid and she wears a simple pearl earring. The black woman has long, flowing, bright blue hair, as well as full red lips. The black woman’s body has a rose over it, and the white woman is wearing what looks like a straw bikini; the figure is wrapped in a thick rope from the waist down. The stark contrast between the white and black meet with a definitive line; there is no blending between the two colors, which amplifies the feelings of separation and difference between the two halves of the woman’s
Jackson Pollock was an American abstract artist born in Cody, Wyoming in 1912. He was the youngest of his five brothers. Even though he was born on a farm, he never milked a cow and he was terrified of horses because he grew up in California. He dropped out of high school at the age of seventeen and proceeded to move to New York City with his older brother, Charles, and studied with Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League. Thomas Benton was already a great artist at the time in which Pollock studied with him. Benton acted like the father figure in Pollock’s life to replace the original that wasn’t there. Benton was known for his large murals that appear on ceilings or walls. “Jack was a rebellious sort at all times,” recalls his classmate and friend, artist Harold Lehman. He grew his hair long and helped pen a manifesto denouncing athletics, even though “he had a muscular build and the school wanted to put him on the football team,” says former teacher Doug Lemon. Pollock always was upset with himself in his studies because he had troubles drawing things like they were supposed to look. From 1938 to 1942, Jackson joined a Mexican workshop of people with a painter named David Siqueiros. This workshop painted the murals for the WPA Federal Art Projects. This new group of people started experimenting with new types of paint and new ways of applying it to large canvas. People say that this time period was when Jackson was stimulated with ideas from looking at the Mexican or WPA murals. Looking at paintings from Picasso and the surrealists also inspired Jackson at this time. The type of paint they used was mixing oil colors with paint used for painting cars. Jackson noticed that the shapes and colors they created were just as beautiful as anything else was. Jackson realized that you didn’t have to be able to draw perfect to make beautiful paintings. Jackson started developing a whole new way of painting that he had never tried before and his paintings were starting to look totally different from before.
While his life was building up to the moment he became rich off of his creativity, it helped him become the man he is today. No matter how unique his life has been, one thing has been a constant in his life, along with many others; He was influenced by the color and personality shown through a piece of art, which was the intent in the first place.

He study at École des Beaux-Art, which was one of the most prestige art schools in the world, which is also known for training many of the renounced artist we know. George Seurat left the École des Beaux-Art and began to work on his own; he began to visit impressionist exhibitions, where he gained inspiration from the impressionist painters, such as Claude Monet. Seurat also was interested in the science of art; he explored perception, color theory and the psychological effect of line and form. The painting that captivated my eyes was “La Buena Ventura”. As I was walking through the hallway my eyes were drawn to this beautiful young woman wearing a bluish greenish dress and what seems to be pink hearts. She is sitting down with a sad look on her face staring at her cards. I tried distinguishing the type of cards and to me they look a little like tarot cards. So I interpreted this as her not happy with what her fortune has in store for her. Maybe she is waiting for her love or she might have found out that tragedy is going to strike her way. I noticed the guitar at the far left corner so she could be a musician who is having a hard time making money. Archibald Motley Jr. was born in 1891 in New Orleans. Ever since, Archibald was a child he had the desire to be an artist. His family moved to a Chicago neighborhood in the 1890’s, but the family would take frequent trips back to New Orleans in the summer. Later we find out that these two similar settings were the determining factor for Archibald’s paintings. He decided to study art at the Institute of Chicago and was recognized by being one of the few African American artists during that time.
To the left of this man, in between him and the woman holding the ladder, there is a group of four women. Three are standing, huddled together, and the other woman is on her knees, hugging the legs of Mary. Mary is the only person in this painting that has a full length white gown with a dark colored headdress. She is looking down toward the ground, but it is unclear if she is looking at the ground or at the woman who is grasping her legs. The two women at the sides of Mary are each grasping one of her arms.

During this time period artists became famous and inspired many people with their works. Caspar David Friedrich was a famous artist who lived from 1774-1840 in Greifswald, Germany. He was known for painting mediums with watercolors and oils, which is landscape art. Friedrich changed the face of landscape paintings with his intense and emotional focus on nature and became a key member of the Romantic Movement. "Friedrich demonstrated piety to God through nature, the diminished strength of man in the larger scale of life, and great emotion."( Artble ) Some of Friedrich's best known works and most easily recognizable paintings include Cross in the Mountains, Wanderer above the Sea of Fog and Two Men Contemplating the Moon. Another famous artist is Ferdinand Eugene Victor Delacroix, more commonly known as Eugene Delacroix, was a French painter who had a profound influence on the Romantic Movement. He was known as a master of color. He lived from 1798-1863 in Charenton, France. He focused on oil, pastel, wood, and other verities of paintings and drawings. Delacroix became a pupil of the English Romantic landscapists and extracted from their techniques, to develop a unique and memorable approach to color.
