Hallucinogens are mind altering drugs known to change one’s perception of their environment, their feelings, and thoughts as well as causing hallucinations. Stimulants are known to increase alertness, wakefulness, as well as improve mental functions. The synthetic drug Ecstasy (also knowns as Molly or MDMA) is one of the most commonly used drugs at raves, or Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festivals because it creates similar mind-altering effects seen in hallucinogens and stimulants. This drug can increase the festival-goers experience of the EDM festival. While an overall ban of drugs at raves is difficult to achieve, more can be done by rave organizers to increase public safety at these events. Emergency room doctors argue that the size of these events makes it difficult to identify festival-goers who are at risk of a drug over dose (Lin II). EDM festivals are not small and many of these events host over 40,000 people. Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Patrick Gannon stated that USC football games garner crowds of 100,000 and these events have to have 125 police officers present, however, raves require more than three times the amount of police officers present because of drug related emergencies and crimes (Romero). A safe environment is one of the responsibilities of a rave organizer. They must make these events smaller so that police officers can police these events better and Emergency crews can identify drug over doses quicker. In conclusion, public safety at rave events are both the concern of both the festival-goer and the rave organizer. Patrons of these events should know not to abuse these drugs because they are illegal and are harmful to their body. However, if rave organizers do their part in improving public safety at these events, the amount of deaths at raves can be reduced significantly when you have more public safety officers, shorter events with smaller crowds, and educated festival-goers on the perils of
