The government should only have the duty to monitor the internet for 2 reasons. First, to monitor for sales of illegal items as well as illegal websites. The second is for crime prediction on social media and to prevent illegal activities. They should monitor for the first, because they need to be able to shut down the illegal black market websites selling illegal weapons or drugs. There are many of these websites in the deep web and we need to try to shut down as many as we possibly can.
To go more in depth for my first reason, which is to monitor for sale of illegal items; I believe that they should monitor for this heavily. This could even be downloading of illegal media. According to pri.org there are over a million illegal downloads in just half a day. There are billions of downloads in a month. That‚Äôs just media, there are multiple illegal items such as drugs and weapons being sold on the dark web today. To be able to put a stop to downloading of illegal movies, shows, games etc. The government needs to be able to monitor the internet to be able to find these websites and shut them down. According to digitaltrends.com, one instance occurred when a U.K man stole $130,000 worth of jewelry and fled the country. Then later returned to the U.K on a vacation under the same assumed identification and posted pictures of his trip on Facebook. The police saw the pictures and were able to track him down and detain him. So, without being able to monitor social media platforms they would have never been able to find this man and detain
