The appropriation of ideas from oppositions, neighbors, friends, experimentation and the environment as far back as we can remember to modern day has placed patents on these ideas in order to protect and credit the individual’s achievements and accomplishments. In order to identify these ideas for its originality and credibility, authors express them in different types of literature. From the literature, future generations can contribute to the knowledge of the world and improve the work of the past. The information from the literature can progress to new profound discoveries. Another form of plagiarism is direct plagiarism, occurring when someone copy and paste a portion of someone else’s exact wording without crediting or providing quotation marks. The most frequently occurring type of plagiarism is accidental plagiarism. This type of plagiarism emerges from misunderstanding to inappropriate citation. Examples include, failure to cite references, misquoting, or paraphrasing by using synonyms, phrases, and/or sentences without accreditation (4). The consequences of plagiarism can humiliate and degrade the academic integrity of both the individual and the institution. So, what are some of these consequences for plagiarism? From my experience and perspective, the consequences for plagiarism affect us both physically and mentally in life. The physical effects are short and less momentous while the mental aspects last for years and affect our short- and long-term goals. The physical effects can diminish the reputations of the institution, individual, and the profession. Some of the physical consequences students face can be failing grade for the course, loss of time and monetary invested, expulsion from the course and academic institution, and/or legal action. The long-lasting consequence that student endure is the loss of trust from friends, peers, relatives, and faculty. I was unfortunate to witness these consequences because other students plagiarized my work. After reviewing their papers, portions of my SOAP note were copied and pasted. I was unhappy for a few days. After several days mediating and reflecting, I decided to approach my roommate and asked why he did it, knowing the policy for plagiarism.
