Driving down Main Street, Honeoye Falls, New York is not a thrilling experience. The town consists of three local pubs constantly filled with drunk fathers, a greasy diner that attracts angsty teenagers, two parks that serve as hideaways for potheads of all ages and an electronic-cigarette store opened by a recent Honeoye Falls alumni. An intelligent human would think that this town could use a little spark, right? Wrong. Three years ago, at a town board meeting, a few well-respected individuals proposed a construction plan for a Dunkin’ Donuts to be built on Main Street. Immediately after the construction began, dozens of community members stood together in front of the worksite protesting what they thought was going to ruin our storybook town. Although I was a full supporter for the construction, they were voicing their opinions for all incredibly valid reasons. To start simply, most protesters were worried our cute, tight-knit village would turn into a shopping mall and strip plaza filled nightmare. Their train of thought was that this Dunkin’ Donuts will open the door for all kinds of large businesses. Many believed that there would be heavier traffic through the village, meaning the small businesses would get more attention because of the new consumers in the area. Dunkin’s Donuts is a very positive addition to the business spectrum of Honeoye Falls however, there is a visible negative facet. For the past ten years, my town has had a tiny coffee shop that struggles to get customers through the door. It’s an unofficial landmark and is owned by a local family. My heart is always stuck with the family-owned businesses as I grew up in one myself. As the construction continues, we can only hope that the local underdog shop can figure out how to stay on the same competitive level as the big shot that has recently moved into
