“Leaders must be close enough to relate to others, but far enough ahead to motivate them.” --John Maxwell. Drum Majors and Section Leaders are renowned for their ability to lead by example, poise, and demeanor. As band camp begins, the Drum Major assists the directors by teaching the incoming marchers basic marching skills and help refresh the rest of the band members on their marching as well. The Section Leaders help their section be comfortable with our challenging music before the band rehearsals and help their section refine their marching skills. Both positions require leadership skills, confidence, and dedication to be successful and I believe that I have what it takes.

An effective leader is confident. I am not afraid to speak to large groups of people and give directions. If I do not understand a task, I will not be afraid to ask for clarification. Additionally, I am a very outgoing person. This will aid me to be an effective leader because I will not be afraid to talk to new people or go out of my way to help a fellow band member who is in need. Another quality which will make me an effective leader is that I am a great listener. I will listen to all directions the first time they are spoken and execute them to the best of my ability. Also, because I am a good listener I will be able to learn things quickly. I take all advice and critiques to heart so I can improve my skills with each time I practice. Because I am able to receive directions the first time I will also be able to help my peers to complete the task as well and will be able to answer other members’ questions. An effective leader is also able to teach others. I have had a lot of experience with teaching others so I know I will be able to teach other marchers how to improve on their skills and become the best marchers they can be. Also because I am very patient, I will be able to work with members who are having a harder time with a certain task without getting angry or frustrated with them. I would make sure that all of my actions positively affected the reputation of the band. One action that I would do to positively affect our reputation would be to increase the advertising of join marching band. Since our band is currently in a growing period, I believe that if more people knew about our band, we could increase our membership and more students could experience what it means to be a Golden Lion. Also, I would always have an energetic and positive attitude at all practices, rehearsals, and games and encourage all other marchers to do the same. By doing this, we would ensure that our band always shows others that we are enjoying ourselves and that we are all excited to be in the marching band. Having a positive attitude at rehearsals will also help our band to get through more drill quicker and polish our drill quicker. When we have a positive attitude you march your best and look more confident and precise with your steps which will make our band as a whole look
