Society is not a realm in which all of the rules are listed on paper; people naturally abide them due to their countless experiences. The results of these incidents or the incident as a whole sometimes transform itself into an unspoken code that people are assumed to know by heart. For example, humans are treated differently - usually with more respect and higher expectations (such as CEOs or famous actors and actresses) - when they are in a very high position or level in an industry. No matter how much or little they do, they are frequently noticed more by the media than anyone else. But how about those who live in their normal lives trying to bring home the bread and milk for their families? My second example is natural hair in the workplace. They deem our hair unkempt, nappy and unprofessional. However, they want us to conform to European standards and have us straighten our hair. Last but not least, while the average white woman gets paid $0.77 to every non-Hispanic white man earns, black women are paid $0.64, and Latina women are paid $0.55.
Stereotyping is something we go through in our daily lives. It happens every day and everywhere. I for one, am also guilty for this even though I don’t like to admit it. Stereotyping groups people; those groups are usually called by a name that doesn’t truly fit that particular gathering. Stereotypes influence people’s lives, feelings, and how individuals cooperate with each other in society. Surprisingly, this also happens in our criminal justice system. Society usually stereotypes a criminal by their race and class and this is shown in the examples like the movie, The Central Park 5, the article “Teaching Literature at the County Jail” and Brock Turner’s case.
Social Norms in America They hold us together as a culture, while separating us as unique individuals at the same time. Folkways, which are based more on custom and etiquette, are the most broken of all norms. This can be explained because in the worst case scenario our only reprimand may be someone staring or talking about us. Mores, while a little more serious than folkways, still don’t have a very serious punishment, just maybe a little more than weird looks, double takes and bad mouthing.
Every society forms different cultures and social norms how people behave and constructs stereotypes and expectations of people based on how they were seen throughout history and cultural backgrounds. Once set, norms are unlikely to be changed over time. This social construction decides which group will have benefits and privileges and which won’t. One example of these social constructed norms is gender. Gender, regardless of how different cultures define it, is generally and mostly made up of masculinity, femininity.
Throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain tells the story of Huck Finn who constantly finds himself surrounded by morally strong people and others who go without morals.After Living with widow Douglas and then leaving with Jim, he feels that superstition provides proof where as christianity does not. In today’s modern society it is known for people to be a little too concerned with the way people perceive them. Discrimination is known to exist in all workplaces, sometimes it is too subtle to notice, and other times it is exceedingly obvious. It is known that everyone subconsciously discriminates, dependant on their own beliefs and environments that surround them. However, discrimination can be either positive or negative in their results, and sometimes discrimination is a necessary part of life.
Waking up in the morning, looking in the mirror, I realize how much I care about what other people think of me even if I try not to. Judgement itself isn’t a bad thing because it helps us choose between right or wrong; good or evil; fair or unjust, but there is a branch of judgment that we could do without, discrimination. Discrimination is a poison killing whatever it touches; giving us false power over those around us. We all deal with discrimination, whether we are on the receiving end, or the cause. Nothing good ever comes from it, so why do we continue to be participants?
