Did you know there is a subspecies of dolphin called Maui’s dolphin and there is estimated to be less than 55 left on the planet! With their slow reproduction rates, it is a challenge for their population to grow. While some people believe saving these animals is a waste of time and money, what I will tell you is fact and cannot be argued. I have always had an interest in endangered species and have spent hours researching whales and dolphins on the internet. Though the decline in whale and dolphin population may not directly impact us living today, it has a great impact on the future of the environment and generations to come. Today I will talk about endangered marine mammals. I will discuss the main causes of whale and dolphin endangerment, why they are important, and how their extinction could impact the planet. First, I will discuss some reasons why they are joining the endangered species list at such an alarming rate.

They are very important to humans for many reasons. First being that they are very intelligent and can teach us a lot. Cetaceans, which are whales, dolphins, and porpoises, are able to communicate with one another, display emotion, and problem solve. On onegreenplanet.org, one writer states that “Dolphins, for example, have been known to recognize themselves in mirrors, solve problems, follow recipes, an associate a part of their anatomy with that of a human’s.” A dolphin expert, Lori Marino who taught at Emory University, took MRI scans of dolphins brains and found that their brains are large, intricate, and structured so that the dolphins can be self aware and feel emotions. Australian beaches are some of the best in the world and WA beaches are some of the best in Australia. But this may soon no longer be a view held by everyone if the WA government continues to support and allow the shark culling off Perth's major beaches. Hi I'm Maya Koentgen, a marine biologist, ecologist and fellow beach user, and I'm here to tell you why shark culling needs to stop. At the moment hundreds of innocent sharks are being caught and killed and why? Because they are simply swimming in their own homes that us humans have invaded.
When an intelligent animal accustomed to swimming in thousands of miles of open ocean is placed in an environment only twice its size, is separated from its species, and is forced to perform tricks, there are bound to be consequences. The captivity of these animals should be banned and National Reserves and whale tours should be used to educate the public while admiring these animals' true beauty. There are few experiences more meaningful than witnessing a killer whale enjoying the freedom of the open ocean.
In the past twenty years a large amount of bottlenose dolphin have been killed due to the tuna fishery. In the Eastern Pacific swim large schools of tuna, these shoals tend to be under herds of dolphins, for some unexplained reason. Because of this, fishermen can easily find schools of tuna. The tuna are being caught under purse seine nets, which encircles the shoals of tuna and then is pulled back on board the fishing vessel, catching both tuna and dolphin. Initially the mortality rate was 500,000 each year for dolphins alone. Although some efforts are made to encourage the dolphins to leave the net by backing down part of the net, which allows the dolphins to escape, there are still a large number of mortalities (Bryant). On the other hand, in the last few years there has been dramatic progress in stopping the fishing industries from using purse sine nets. It has been found that dolphins are in immediate danger of extinction if these fishing techniques don’t stop.

In batoids, the pelvic fins are used for walking, which is when pelvic fins move in an alternating fashion, or punting, when both pelvic fins move at the same time. I remember clearly watching the Shamu show and sitting in the splash zone, ending up soaked in water by the end. But I also distinctly remember wondering how an animal so big and beautiful could ever be happy in such a small tank, so far away from home. The animals could never possibly experience the joy they would have out in the wild where they belonged.
They are the second smartest animal in the world. They nurture their young for most of their lives. They also socialise with any creature, unless they show signs of harm. Dolphins make very popular playmates and will come up to humans for almost anything. They rely on each other to live. They learn quickly and communicate well with one another. God designed dolphins with unique physical features and behaviors in order to glorify Him.
In conclusion, education, research and conservation is a very important role that we can make to improve the lives of Orca whales, but at what cost? When you have to take an animal out of its natural habitat and deprive it of all its natural instincts, cause unnecessary emotional and physical problems, and put the lives of the whales and their trainers at risk, what are we learning? That it’s okay to possess them merely for our entertainment and profit? A wild animal’s life remains destroyed and many lives have ended, all for dangerous entertainment.
It all began with good intentions. People thinking that they can control these animals and not expect any negative impacts. It was all due to wanting to explore and entertain with the animals. However, not all animals are meant to be taken from the wild to be show animals. After many years of unfair ways, SeaWorld is doing the right thing by closing down the whale exhibit even if it isn’t by choice because it is unhealthy for both the humans and animals involved.
Everybody has one thing in the world that they feel strongly about. Weather if it is a stuffed animal, person, or a job. We all praise something. I believe that we need to stop whaling. Every day whale after whale die. Why? Just because people want their meat and to make oil and some money. We need to find a way to stop these terrible Pandemic. There has to be another way to make money and oil than killing this marvelous animal. If this was happening to you what would you want to do to stop this?
Blue whales, also known as (Balaenoptera musculus), are considered one of the largest animals today (NOAA). A blue whale can grow up to “80- 100 feet in length and may weigh up to 200 tons” (World Wild Life).
Millions of people visit Sea World each year (The Fate). They crowd into Shamu Stadium to be entertained by the killer whales as they perform. Their eyes widen, and they sit in awe, as these enormous creatures effortlessly propel themselves out of the water. The children in the audience squeal with delight as the orca’s giant tail sends a wave of ice water over the crowd. But these fast-paced, high-spirited shows hide a darker reality. They are designed to mask the reality of the bare, cold concrete walls that the Orcas are forced to call home. It’s time for people to realize the plight of these mammals. Keeping Orcas in captivity is both harmful and cruel.
Orca whales do not like to be taken from their family, held captive for many decades and put with other whales that they do not know. No other living organism on this planet would like to be put through the same thing. Orca whales are highly social animals, they are very intelligent, and are very emotional. If they are kept away from other whales, fed intermittently and received little attention from staff makes them get very emotional and can lead to death of people and the whales. Orca whales should not be held captive; they are beautiful creatures that are not great for people’s amusement and if they are treated poorly, they will act poorly.
If Australia leads the way to making stricter rules to save the lives of these majestic creatures, the variety of species can recover. Overall the humpback whale has moved from 'vulnerable' to 'least concern' on the IUCN Red List, a list of the worlds species facing the highest risk of extinction. This means that overall humpback whales are less likely to become extinct which is a level needed for all whales. This is a great recovery however it is not enough to restore the marine balance in the oceans. We need at act NOW, in order to safeguard the futures of our worlds whales.
