Did you know there is a subspecies of dolphin called Maui’s dolphin and there is estimated to be less than 55 left on the planet! With their slow reproduction rates, it is a challenge for their population to grow. While some people believe saving these animals is a waste of time and money, what I will tell you is fact and cannot be argued. I have always had an interest in endangered species and have spent hours researching whales and dolphins on the internet. Though the decline in whale and dolphin population may not directly impact us living today, it has a great impact on the future of the environment and generations to come. Today I will talk about endangered marine mammals. I will discuss the main causes of whale and dolphin endangerment, why they are important, and how their extinction could impact the planet. First, I will discuss some reasons why they are joining the endangered species list at such an alarming rate.

They are very important to humans for many reasons. First being that they are very intelligent and can teach us a lot. Cetaceans, which are whales, dolphins, and porpoises, are able to communicate with one another, display emotion, and problem solve. On onegreenplanet.org, one writer states that “Dolphins, for example, have been known to recognize themselves in mirrors, solve problems, follow recipes, an associate a part of their anatomy with that of a human’s.” A dolphin expert, Lori Marino who taught at Emory University, took MRI scans of dolphins brains and found that their brains are large, intricate, and structured so that the dolphins can be self aware and feel emotions.
