Dolores Huerta is acknowledged as one of the most leading women in the United States labor movement and is heralded as an inspiring role model for the youth of today. Although Huerta is sought after as a speaker, her early life, her upbringing, her awakening as a social activist, her relationship with César E. Chávez. Her many career struggles, and her contribution to the Union Farm Workers are not well known outside of labor and Mexican American people. Dolores Huerta there wanted to form an organization that fought for the rights of farm workers. While Dolores Huerta would work at CSO she organized and founded the Agricultural Workers Association in 1960 .In 1962, the CSO turned down her and Cesar Chavez’s request, to organize farm workers, her and Cesar Chavez resigned from the CSO. After that happen she went to go work for the National Farm Workers Association which would later be known or become the United Farm Workers Organization. They would work long hours without rest and little to no access to water or restrooms. All the workers would share drinking water by passing around a can and everyone would drink from there. Leonora M. Barry was born in County Cork, Ireland, on August 13th, 1849. She was raised by her parents, John and Honor Granger Kearney (en.wikipedia.org). Leonora lost her mother at an early age and faced many family hardships. But, she persevered and became a school teacher at the age of 15. In 1880, Leonora’s husband died and she was left to raise three children alone. Leonora needed money so she got a job in a factory where she worked for two years. The factory was a miserable place to work with terrible hourly wages. However, she needed the money to support her family. In 1884, Leonora Barry joined the Knights of Labor and campaigned to abolish child labor. Leonora was elected to travel to different factories and record her observations of poor working conditions in factories for women. She traveled to the biggest industrial cities. This task prompted Leonora to write “Organizing Women Workers.” () Leonora was also prompted to write the article by her personal beliefs and views. She had worked in a factory for two years making no more than 65 cents in her first week but she pushed through and stuck with that factory job for two years (www.patheos.com).

She got them rights for safer working conditions with safer machines. Before the factory workers had better rights and safer working conditions, many factory workers would have some of their limbs cut off by the machines. “Mother” Jones started non-violent marches to try and get the factory workers better rights. She didn’t succeed when she was alive, but the laws were passed a few years after she died. She raised the awareness of what happened in the factory, and that is one of the reasons those laws were passed.

Dolores Huerta was key in organizing citizenship requirements removed from pension, and public assistance programs. She also was instrumental in passage of legislation allowing voters the right to vote in Spanish, and the right of individuals to take the driver’s license examination in their native language. Dolores Huerta moved on to working with Cesar Chavez. Dolores was the main person at National Farm Workers Association (“NFWA”) who negotiated with employers and organized boycotts, strikes, demonstrations and marches for the farm workers.
