Do Curfews Keep Teens Out Of Trouble

There is a time in our lives when our parents choose to control us or choose not to. There are some teenagers that choose to make their own choices that are not great for them. That is when parents need to step in. Now that the things around us are getting worse, like the amount of crime increasing in our towns, it is time for parents to look at the fact that they need to protect their children. Curfews do not keep teens out of trouble because of violent crime, teens not enforcing the idea, and disapproval by parents. Violent crime is one of the reasons to have curfews. “Violent crime in Abilene increased 43 percent from 2011 to 2015, according to the Police Department. Violent crime includes murder, robbery, rape/sexual assault and aggravated assault ” (Crum). As the amount of crime increases, it is not safe for teens to be out by themselves without adult supervision or at least without a close friend. There are a lot of people wandering off at night, possibly people that are intoxicated or doing drugs. Some teens are probably consuming alcohol when they are out. Teens who are alone at night may have a more likely chance of getting raped by strangers or even get kidnapped. Teens feel like they need to do whatever they want and live their lives at the fullest. “Usually if kids are out late they’re usually doing something they’re not supposed to be doing.” Roach said. But he said he did not know if a curfew would help resolve any problems” (George). If having a curfew keeps teens out of trouble, then it is going to make them not enforce it and try to break it and probably do illegal things that will possibly affect their future. Some teens think that doing things they are not supposed to do is going to make them think that their parents will not care because they do not know what they have been up
