Recommended: Cultural differences

Beatrice Prior lives in a future version of Chicago where the people live in 5 distinct separated factions. Each faction has a different purpose and way of living. Dauntless, dangerous and protective, guards the city from the unknowns of the outside world. Erudite, smart and cunning, develop the city’s high-tech medicines and technology. Abnegation, selfless and caring, is responsible for taking care of the factionless and running the city’s government. Candor, always honest, provide the judges and lawyers for the city. And last but not least Amity, loving and peaceful, run the farms on the outside of the fences that surround the city. The Prior family belong to the Abnegation faction, and Beatrice has been taught her whole life how to be selfless and caring. When the children of this town turn sixteen they go through a special test that tells them which faction they are most suitable for. Most people only get one result from this test but Beatrice’s test stated that she was aptitude for three factions: Erudite, Abnegation, and Dauntless. This is very rare, but there are some other people like her. They are called Divergents. The day after the test there is a choosing ceremony where the children pick which faction they would like to be in. If they pick a different faction than what their family is in they are “shunned” and hardly ever see them again. Beatrice chooses the Dauntless faction and her family, and most of the town, is in shock. A faction transfer from Dauntless to Abnegation is almost unheard of. But choosing Dauntless is not all the initiates have to do to get into it. All new Dauntless initiates have to train and compete to become a member of Dauntless. ...e rest of her family and becomes determined to stop this horrible situation. Her brother, dad, and Four’s abusive dad join her in her journey. They head toward the Dauntless headquarters. They head towards the top level where the simulation causing everyone to act this way is being run from. On the way Tris’s father is killed trying to fight off some Dauntless guards. Tris makes it to the top and finds that her love, Four, is running the simulation. She knows she has to kill him. They get in a big fight and at one point she has a gun pointed straight at him, but she can’t kill him. She turns the gun around and gives it to him. This confuses him and wakes him up from his trance. They then stop the simulation and escape together. The book ends with Four, Tris, Four’s abusive dad, and Tris’s brother riding away on a train away from all the chaos on the city.

The authors use life history interviews as well as crime history to help explain their theory. They interviewed these men various times throughout their lives, from a very young age up until age seventy. In Chapter six, Laub and Sampson mention the lives of a few men who have turned to desistance, or stopping, in committing crime. There were two subgroups, “nonviolent desisters” and “violent desisters”. These men had tough upbringings, living in deteriorated homes in Boston. Their parents were not supportive and showed little interest in parenting. Eric displays his courage in many different ways. Eric puts his life in danger every day by lying to the faction he leads, communicating with his leader, and through the acts he commits every day. Throughout the book you see Eric’s cunning and bravery displayed over and over again. He talks very tactfully and hides his true intentions well. He never faltered once and continued on, knowing that if he was caught, his punishment would be far worse than death.
