Discrimination Discrimination is a cruel and unjust act. Unfortunately, discrimination has been around for thousands of years. There are many different parts of discrimination like having a mental or physical disability, religion, and race.
People who have mental or physical disabilities are discriminated against daily. There are examples of this kind of discrimination in Of Mice and Men: That ranch we’re goin’ to is right down there about a quarter mile. We’re gonna go in an’ see the boss. Now, look, I’ll give him the work tickets, but you ain’t gonna say a word. You jus’ stand there and don’t say nothing. In the past, if someone had a mental or physical disability, they would send them off to an insane asylum even though they were not dangerous to anyone. No matter the handicap, the person would be institutionalized even if they were not crazy. The Holocaust is an excellent example of discrimination. The Jews and gypsies were exiled to numerous concentration and work camps just because they were viewed as different. During the Holocaust, 6 million of the 11 million people who were killed were Jews. Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, disabled people, and Roma were other groups who died in these dreadful camps.The Nuremberg Laws, excluded Jewish people from public life beginning September 15, 1935. Discriminating because of race was a big part of our society years ago, as well as still today. In To Kill a Mockingbird, there was a lot of discrimination, no matter the skin color like when Lula said, “ You ain’t got no business bringin’ white chillun here-they got their church, we got our’n. It is our church, ain’t it, Miss Cal?” (48-52) Judging someone based on the color of their skin is wrong no matter what. Not only are African Americans being discriminated against, but also many Latinos, Muslims, and even Caucasians are faced with racial discrimination.
