It is the year 2018 and women are finally being treated fairly. We are able to get almost any job we want, get and education, and finally get the respect we deserve, but things were not always like this. Looking back in our nation's history, we can see that women have not always been treated this way and have had to fight just to be respected. Although there are many books we could reference about the unfair treatment of women, one book that will help you understand just how unfairly women were treated is Of Mice and Men. In the beginning of Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck gives us a very good description of Curley’s wife’s physical features. She had very curly hair, which is coincidental knowing that she married a guy named Curley, and was always seen wearing a cotton dress. She also always wears a ton of makeup and has long, bright red nails. In other words she is described as a girl who wasn’t afraid to show herself off, if you know what I’m saying. Steinbeck gives Candy’s wife a very slutty physical appearance to make us see how the men saw her during that time. Candy’s wife was also a very lonely girl who only wanted someone to talk to, but when she tried to talk to the guys, they would all turn her away because they thought that she had the eye for them and didn’t want to get in any trouble. Lastly, to show how underappreciated women were during this time, Steinbeck didn’t even give Curley’s wife a name to show how they were only seen as property to their husbands and weren’t good for anything else. Today, we can appreciate women like this who had to struggle and live during these hard times, for pushing through and getting us for the rights we deserve today. We can also appreciate great books, like Of Mice and Men for showing us how unfairly women were treated during this time, so we don’t take advantage of the rights we have
