A discourse community is a group of individuals all with relatively the same ending goal or original interest that all have their own way of participation and have different motives. Literacy in a discourse community will result in more involvement and understanding of the group itself. Discourse communities can be discovered in several different places; it is just a matter of the desired interest. The entire population is divided into discourse communities whether they are large or small. Every person’s interests put them within a discourse community, whether it is desired or not. Instructions and pictures are available on each piece of equipment. However, most beginners do not understand the language placed on the equipment. This is an example of a common problem in the gym that leads to an opportunity for an instructor to enforce the importance of proper technique and the advantage of maintaining the initial goal. The language the people around them use in the gym can be difficult to pick up on as well. Understanding the language can mean knowing the difference between a kettle bell and a dumbbell, knowing what the cable machines are used for, and know what everyone is referring to when they talk about keeping track of their macros. For instance, understanding the difference between a kettle bell and a dumbbell can affect the way an individual completes an exercise, and if the exercise is complete incorrectly it can have a negative effect on the progress they make. Understanding a cable machine can have the same effect by not allowing the individual to complete the exercises correctly. On the other hand, understanding counting macros refers to nutrition is a “slang” the fitness discourse community created themselves. Macros is also known as the necessary macronutrients in the recommended diet. Walking into a gym for the first time and hearing the slang of the others around can be intimidating and make an individual feel like an outsider, but once the effort is made to understand the language of the fitness discourse community, literacy is easily
