Before this class began, I was not very sure about who was considered to be in poverty and who was not. My idea of poverty related to the starving children that you see on television in third world countries and it never really occurred to me that poverty is also one of the biggest problems that society is faced with throughout the world today. It is very apparent that poverty should be one of the main priorities for our world leaders and that we should stop at nothing to end poverty as quickly as possible. In America as the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the gap between the two is still larger here than anywhere else in the world. This class has improved my knowledge on the subject of poverty and I now understand how big of a problem poverty in the United States as well as poverty from a global perspective really is.
Within the United States poverty is an enormous problem. Extreme poverty or poverty suffered by people who live on less than $1 a day, can be found in a wide variety of different types of people. Children in the United States suffer tremendously from poverty, which contributes to the problem itself and allows poverty to evolve more rapidly. All in all my answers to the questions on the survey were nearly identical. Although, after learning all of the information that this class has provided my view on poverty has changed dramatically.
The impact that poverty has on the United States as well as on the rest of the world is a problem that absolutely must be taken seriously and eliminated as quickly as possible. This class has shown me a variety of different factors that contribute to the evolution of poverty that must be erased. Globalization and increasing levels of opportunity and education as well as increasing monetary contributions could provide an enormous push towards the elimination of poverty throughout the world.
