This unit about poverty will teach students about poverty concerns in Baltimore and in different areas around the world. It is important for students to be aware of the certain issues that are currently occurring in their area and in other parts of the country. Some students may be have known that there are issues occurring where they live. According to Robert G. Hanvey in An Attainable Global Perspective, “For most people in the world, direct experience beyond the local community is infrequent – or non-existent. It is not uncommon to meet residents of Chicago’s neighborhoods who have never traveled the few miles to the central business district, or sophisticated New York taxicab drivers who have never been further south than Philadelphia” (Hanvey, 163). Robert G. Hanvey’s statement means that people are not aware about issues that are going on around the world because they haven’t stepped foot outside of where they live locally. Hanvey’s An Attainable Global Perspective, “The recognition or awareness on the part of the individual that he or she has a view of the world that is not universally shared, that this view of the world has been and continues to be shaped by influences that often escape conscious detection, and that others have views of the world that are profoundly different from one’s own” (Hanvey, 162). In this statement, Robert G. Hanvey discusses the meaning of perspective consciousness. Hanvey believes that the world view is not really shared much. In this unit, the students will first be able to learn about the poverty issue locally and globally. Then, based on the information they learn about poverty, the students will be able to discuss with group members and the class what their thoughts are about the issue of poverty.
