Diego de Siloe Diego Siloe was a famous Renaissance architect and sculptor from Spain. His actual name is Diego de Siloe but he goes by just Diego Siloe. He was born in Burgos, Spain in the year of 1495. He was also raised in Burgos until he moved away to Granada in 1528. The first part of his career was spent in Burgos from 1519-1528, where he built some famous sculptures. One of them is the staircase located in the Burgos Cathedral, and the Santa Maria del Campo bell tower that he helped with. The second part of his career started in 1528 when he moved to, Granada and worked there until the time of his death in 1563. Some of his famous sculptures in that time was the Holy Family, and the Saint John. Diego learned from his dad by studying and teaching him. His dad is Gil de Siloe who is also a famous sculptor. Diego was trained to sculpt with wood alabaster and stone. His sculptures were a combination of his old fashioned house in Spain, mixed with remembrance from all his travels. The staircase is gold with engravings of coats of arms, cherubs, and vegetal ornamentation. The staircase covers one entire wall of the cathedral. His most important work was Saint John and the Holy Family. The Holy Family was built from 1567-1568. It was made out of wood, painted and gilt. The sculpture includes the saints Anne and Joachim, and Mary and Joseph. They are all four looking at the child that Mary is holding. He also helped on the Santa Maria del Campo bell tower in 1527. One of Basque Country’s funeral monuments was created by Diego which is at the church of San Miguel Arcangel in Onate. Another famous sculpture is the Granada Cathedral, which he made in two of the famous buildings that are in Spain with the Renaissance
