For some people, Band Camp is amazing and it’s a wonderful experience that you can always look back on. But for me, Band Camp was a complete disaster. From the first day there to the last, I dreaded the whole thing. I don’t remember what day it was, but I do remember going to Band Camp early summer in 2016. I had just finished 6th grade. I was so excited for Band Camp. Everyone made it sound like so much fun. My aunt decided to take me because everyone else was busy. When we arrived, there were a lot of people in line. The line was almost going outside. There were two dorm buildings, one for girls and one for guys. I obviously went over to the girls one. My aunt and I got me signed in and I went a t-shirt, which I still have. We brought all my stuff up to my room and got everything set up. The first night went smoothly. We went over all the rules that night and I went to bed at 10:30. First night over with.

I hated Band Camp. I know hate is a strong word but Band Camp was awful. I went home feeling happy that it was over but also disappointed because everything that I had heard about Band Camp was false. It wasn’t amazing. It wasn’t an amazing opportunity. It was dreadful. I’m pretty sure I was the only one who thought that though. I was so happy to finally get a good night’s sleep when I got home that day.

The night was young times were crazy and it was only the beginning of my senior year. It was still warm out and it still felt like summer; we didn’t know that we could have this much fun in one night, but we knew we were going to have fun no matter what. On the way to camp Kangaroobie we went to Mr Mcguane’s farm. The year 5 bus broke down so we came late. When we got there, we walked around this little river skipping rocks and getting stuck in the mud. When we arrived at camp, went to our cabins, and I was with, Emily, Felicia, Sarah, Grace and Klara, we packed our bag and went for a walk down to the beach! Imagine the biggest deer of our life walking in front of us. The thing is so big that at first glance you didn’t even think it was a deer. That is what the Zellmer deer camp is all about. The deer camp was started seven and a half decades ago by my grandfather’s grandfather.
Band has really helped change my life because It showed me how to learn and pay attention. Learning to play an instrument is pretty difficult for most, but if you practice you can accomplish it with time. It didn't take me long before I got the hang of it and started to get fairly good at it.
I was going thru a lot but when It came to that class people actually showed an interest in talking to me and how I was. It also helped me be more discipline and serious.(mentally). I believe my character has changed from shy to outgoing, messy to responsible. Being a member of the Firelands High School “Mighty Falcon Marching Band” has taught me more about myself, shown me respect for others, given me a sense of commitment, and brought me more positive experiences in my high school career than anything else I have participated in. The long, challenging rehearsals wonderful performances, and exciting trips have defined my experiences during the past four marching seasons. This ragtag group became my second family. I obtained these lessons about being a part of a group and putting the needs of others above myself; this has been the most crucial lesson. I’ve had the honor to partake in the extremely rewarding feelings, such as enthusiasm and excitement, that come with being a part of a band.
The band has taught me many valuable lessons. My technical skills have grown as well as my social skills. I’ve learned to treat others with respect; additionally, I now understand my unique learning style. I am a much faster learner due to being taught work in a short amount of time which has helped me tremendously with school. I used to not care about my grades in middle school, for I had nothing to work towards. I just went there turned in some work and called it a day. Now I have something to keep me on my toes, and my grades have become tip top, thus I am now able to be a part of this organization. My confidence has exceedingly grown since last year. I was very self conscious about who I was, for I had nothing to help me embrace who I truly am. I have been taught major things about self discipline this past season. Success is a road paved with mistake and failure. Through these mistakes, I learned self control and perseverance. Going back to freshman year I didn’t think I would be as skilled
I remember taking a deep breath, closing my eyes, and listening to the silence around me. All of my hard hours of work and preparation were for that very performance. The lights shown on the freshly cut football field, the crowd filled the stands, and we were all stood at attention at the endzone. It was the home invite for the Kankakee Valley High School Marching Band and twelve other schools from all around.
In the summer of 2012 I got signed up for Pioneer Camp for the first time. I was excited and thought I would have fun however, I was really shy meeting people and interacting with the public. My fondest memories of that year were making crafts and learning what kids my age had to do on a daily basis for education and supporting the family in the 1830s. That year, I did overcome my shyness and met a girl named Nia. We loved to play graces, a game that uses sticks and a wooden hoop that you throw in the air. I liked it so much that I even bought a graces kit that I used to teach my friends from school how to play.
In ninth grade, I realized my passions were going through a rapid change. I started hating football because it wasn’t the same sport I played for six years before. It became more complex with schemes and coverages, and ultimately robbed the game of pleasure because it was no longer tackle the kid with the ball. More importantly, I no longer had the sense of acceptance and accomplishment due to me growing so vastly different from my peers. I also participated in band at this time which gained my interest and affection more so than football. One day Lucas, the saxophone section leader at the time, asked me if I was going to join marching band, and I told him yes because I was ready for a change. This monumental decision forever changed my life, and consequently I would’ve never been the same person I am now.
I am not from a very musical family, so band opened up a completely different world to me. Participating in band allowed me to be more well rounded in my school activities and created a better sense of culture with in me. Playing saxophone in our high school band was an extremely enjoyable experience, I personally enjoyed listening to my part and corresponding parts. Listening to the tones of each individual instrument, as a perfect harmonic sound protruded. It was relaxing as it was a break from my rigorous course load. Band gave me the opportunity to be creative, which was generally absent in my daily life. Having the opportunity to play a musical instrument has also enhanced my intellectual abilities. My counselors built our schedule based on a list of girl-planned ideas--even accommodating outlandish ones like hosting a medieval jousting tournament. During our session, we developed courage as we shook our way across the monkey bridge. We developed confidence as we shot bows and arrows. We developed character as we sat in magic circles to share compliments and discuss interpersonal challenges. We were gently encouraged to try new things--including snacks like boob fudge--thanks to our counselors’ challenge-by-choice style. At night, the entire camp came together for all-camp theme nights and traditional campfires. From the friendships they can make that will last a lifetime, to the distinct memories they have of campfire traditions, camp is laced with immeasurable meaning. The skills that children learn and practice at camp can become a part of their identity, and may even grow into passions that they will continue to pursue as an adult. Whether they want it or not, the songs with constantly haunt them throughout the years and though they claim to hate it, they secretly enjoy the reminder of summer fun and adventure.
