A young flustered woman is hurrying home after a morning of heartache. Her most recent relationship, with a man she thought had loved her, had just turned sour. She wants to take her mind off of the troubling hardship, but doesn 't know how. As she is walking down the busy Sunday afternoon street a poster for a new painting class starting later that evening at her local recreational center catches her eye. Reminding her of the time she took art in high school she decides to take interest in the class. However, before entering the class she wanted to refresh her memory on how to mix paint colors. The film Color Purple first adopted from a novel by Alice Walker in 1982. It Celie as a black woman whose life is marred by oppression mistreatment by the men present in her life. Celie endures all the pain quietly and makes no effort to fight for her rights. It was only after meeting two incredible friends in her life that Celie learned she could stand up against an individual and protect herself from the oppression and ill treatment. Raped at the age of fourteen, Celie bears to children who are also taken away from her by the father. She is later on forced into marriage to Albert, who is a widower with four children.
When one first looks at Ray II they see a ray of bright colors that are arranged in no particular order. It was as if he was just having a good day and he through some paint on a canvas. I am no artist so that is definitely a method that I would use. When one looks at the painting more closely though, they see that the color paint comes from one focal point that is not present on the canvas. The pattern of the paint makes it look like the canvas is part of a bigger circle that has a centralized point with white splatters around the circle. The white is mainly on the bottom of the canvas.

The face and front half of the hippopotamus body is gray, while in between its front feet and back feet it becomes turquoise. However, the back-left foot of the hippopotamus is partially turquoise and partially gray. The gray color of the hippopotamus is vibrant, meanwhile the turquoise part of the hippopotamus is muddled. It is muddled because of the black lines, which make the turquoise parts seem like a puzzle, for instance if one removes a piece of the hippopotamus’ midsection between his feet it can be easily be put back because of the black lines. Moreover, the lines on the hippopotamus’ face, the diamond shaped plants, and the hippopotamus’ eyes are also black. The texture of the hippopotamus seems smooth. Additionally, there seems to be a crack where the leaf is near the leg of the hippopotamus. Moreover, the crack shows that underneath the turquoise color is gray. Perhaps the hippopotamus was originally painted gray and then was painted turquoise. Additionally, the hippopotamus looks as though it is glowing because it is shiny. However, the turquoise part is not as shiny it is dull, perhaps because the turquoise color was painted on over the gray color. Color can be a semiotic resource. It has many uses in the cultural association of signs. Some features that contribute as a signifier are saturation, purity, modulation, value and hue. Red can signify danger, green can stand for hope. In most countries black is a sign of mourning. However, in some parts of Europe, brides wear black for their wedding. In China and some other Eastern Asian countries, white is considered the color for mourning. While in America and most of Europe, white is a sign of purity and warn by brides. These contrasts of cultural semiotics make color partly unpredictable. In order for the color to function as a sign, there must be a consensus of meaning. In most cases there is not a consensus that is shared by all societies. There are some regularities and this is what makes color function as a semiotic resource. The challenge is understanding the motivations and interests of different groups. Some colors translate well and some do not. Finding these regularities within groups and applying them as semiotic resources is a challenge (Kress, 2002). Some associations to color are universal and these connections could spread as communication becomes more global (Eiseman, 2000).
