Describing the night of the killings, after 10 p.m. on Aug. 20, 1989, Erik says that he and Lyle got into an argument with their parents at their Beverly Hills, California, home. The fight then escalated, he claims. “I was in the foyer, Lyle was coming out of the den and my mom was following him and saying, ‘You’re not going out,’ and Lyle said, ‘Why?’ And my mom said, ‘Because I said so,’ and then my dad came out and he told my mom to shut up. He looked at Lyle and said, ‘You’re not going out.’ He told me to go to my room and he told me he would be there in a minute.” And then, Lyle has said in court, he told his father: “You’re not going to touch my brother. On August 19, their parents chartered a yacht and took them shark fishing. On August 20, 1989, they burst into the den of their home and discharged 15 shots into their parents while the couple was watching television on the couch. Erik said that he fired first, but in the end Lyle fired best: He landed the bullet in the back of Jose’s head, and shot the fatal blow into Kitty’s face. That falling evening Lyle and Erik, 21 and 18, respectively, went to see the new James Bond movie, License to Kill. They couldn’t get in, so they saw Batman instead. They tossed the guns and changed into clean, unbloodied clothes, before driving back to their house and pretending to discover the scene all over again. Then the brothers called 911. “Someone killed my parents,” Lyle screamed at the dispatcher. Between sobs, he tried answering questions about what happened: “I don’t know. I wasn’t here. I just came home. Erik! Get away from them. At first, the brothers blamed the mob, but the grisly scene indicated a murder that was intimate and emotionally charged. Jose was shot half a dozen times, including once in the back of the head, nearly decapitating him; Kitty was shot in her chest, arm, hip and leg, with a final, disfiguring blow to her face.
