I am a first-generation daughter to Nigerian immigrant parents. As one can imagine, the journey from a populous country in West Africa to the city of Dallas, Texas can be a strenuous task to overcome. In spite of this, both of my parents collectively made the difficult decision to leave their families in Nigeria for brighter prospects and opportunities the American education system had to offer. Not only did they decide this would be best for themselves, my parents decided to raise my siblings and I in America as well. Because of the obstacles my mother and father have endured in their past, they have ensured that my siblings and I have not had to make the same difficult decisions as they did. Specifically, my interpersonal relationships with dental professionals has helped guide me throughout my decision to be a part of this field. A dear friend of mine by the name of Olamide, who initially was taking the same journey as I, in terms of taking prerequisite courses for Dental school has truly been my motivation throughout my previous semesters. We both often spoke of our dreams and aspirations involving the medical field. Olamide and I would often study together for our individual exams that were ahead of us. For many years Olamide had been fighting a long and difficult battle against a disease by the name of sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell anemia is an autoimmune disease which causes the red blood cells within the body to take on a sickle or crescent shaped appearance. This affect causes the red blood cells to die rapidly. Unfortunately, Olamide lost this fight at the beginning of our sophomore year of college together. In spite of the fact that this has been a difficult year for myself as far as coping with the fact that someone who has motivated me throughout our journey together is gone, I believe that I have taken that same emotion and have used to push myself forward. I know think of Olamide in all that I do, both academically and socially. Knowing that Olamide would truthfully want me to wholeheartedly take full advantage of all available opportunities that will further not only my knowledge, but also my hands-on experience with the dental field, which I believe the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) aspires to achieve, is what strongly influences my perseverance throughout the following
