Liberty Leading the People is an oil painting of the Romantic Era painted on a canvas by Eugène Delacroix in the year 1830. The setting of the painting is in Paris, France at a blockade in the road, which was set up by the revolutionists. It is important to note that at the time Paris medieval city, so the streets were narrow which made it relatively easy to block out French troops. The blockades were often made of stone, like the cobblestone you see in the paining, furniture, and wagons; these blockades enabled revolutionists to block off sections of the city, which in turn allowed them to control sections of the city. He captures the eye with his choice of colors and contrast: The brushstrokes and color of this painting demand your attention. The scene is horrifying and inspiring all at the same time; the dead bodies are depressing, but Lady Liberty is leading the French revolutionists to freedom which gives you a hopeful feeling. As many of the other painting from the Romantic Era, Liberty Leading the People is a great example of symbolism. Lady Liberty as I mentioned earlier is a symbol for the idea of freedom, and the flag she carries symbolizes the French nation that she is leading. The stance that Liberty is in give you the impression that she is what is encouraging the revolutionists to fight. The dead bodies symbolize the awful, horrendous cost of rebellion; the men with the guns are a symbol of the people’s willingness to fight for a free Paris. In the bottom left of the painting there is a dead man lying there lifeless in what appears to be a night gown, which is a gruesome reminder that many of the king’s men would enter the houses of revolutionist while they were sleeping and kill
