What is the definition of being a man? Many boys hear phrases like, “Man up.” “Don’t be a sissy.” “Don’t cry.” “Talk like a man.” “Be a man.” All of those sayings at one point in time were relevant. Now those phrases are outdated because our community as a whole has advanced. Millions of men young or old feel the need to live up to the expectations of being the perfect man. Others think that being the “Perfect Man” is what our society needs. It is important because if we don’t do anything about it, boys will continue thinking that they need to reach these unreachable standards. Ever since the beginning of human life, men were expected to be the ones who hunt, do heavy lifting, protect their family, and take care of themselves and their family. This may be true, but ever since the advancement of technology and our better understanding of the human race, there isn’t huge need for that anymore. So yes, the people who think that being a man is showing no emotion, or caring are correct, but only if they were living hundreds of years ago. The TV survivalist Bear Grylls stated, “The problem with you modern men, is that instead of using your spear, your brains, your resourcefulness, and your courage, you rely on modern technology to survive” (Bear Grylls, TheTelegraph). Now I believe that is a solution to this problem, and we have been doing it for years.
Women have been fighting for equal rights ever since our country was created. Now I know that what men are fighting for is a different situation, but there is a common ground, Samantha Olson says in Medical Daily, “Feminism only speaks of one lopsided perspective in the gender inequality story. There is a common misconception that men are a gender exempt from the burdening expectations, stereotypes, and social pressures.
