What is the definition of being a man? Many boys hear phrases like, “Man up.” “Don’t be a sissy.” “Don’t cry.” “Talk like a man.” “Be a man.” All of those sayings at one point in time were relevant. Now those phrases are outdated because our community as a whole has advanced. Millions of men young or old feel the need to live up to the expectations of being the perfect man. Others think that being the “Perfect Man” is what our society needs. It is important because if we don’t do anything about it, boys will continue thinking that they need to reach these unreachable standards. Ever since the beginning of human life, men were expected to be the ones who hunt, do heavy lifting, protect their family, and take care of themselves and their family. This may be true, but ever since the advancement of technology and our better understanding of the human race, there isn’t huge need for that anymore. So yes, the people who think that being a man is showing no emotion, or caring are correct, but only if they were living hundreds of years ago. The TV survivalist Bear Grylls stated, “The problem with you modern men, is that instead of using your spear, your brains, your resourcefulness, and your courage, you rely on modern technology to survive” (Bear Grylls, TheTelegraph). Now I believe that is a solution to this problem, and we have been doing it for years.
Women have been fighting for equal rights ever since our country was created. When someone is thinking of a man, what do they think? Strong? Brave? That’s what most people think; in reality that is a very false image. In “Bros Before Hos: The Guy Code,” Michael Kimmel, talks about what it means to be a man and what it takes to be a man in today’s world. Men are pressured into what they “should” be. If they don’t follow certain unwritten rules, which include: not asking for directions, not giving up, not showing fear, or any signs of emotional weakness, such as tears; they are considered less than a man, a wimp. A real man must be aggressive and brave, he must defend his territory: status, family, possessions. Men blindly follow the Guy Code, they believe in order to fit in, they must comply and be part of the pack.

Everyone is capable of wanting equality for all people. Women are not the only people to strive for gender equality for woman. Many men want to see all people treated equally but do not feel confident enough to talk about it. Women Deserve the Same Rights as Men From the beginning of time, women have played a powerful role in the shaping of this world. They have stood by idly and watched as this country moved on without them, and yet they have demanded equal rights as the nation rolls along. Throughout history, there have been constant power struggles between men and women, placing the male population at a higher position than the female. Therefore, in this patriarchal system women have always been discriminated against simply due to the fact that they are women. Their rights to vote, to be educated and essentially being treated equally with men was taken away from them and they were viewed as weak members of society whose successes depend on men. However, this has not prevented them from fighting for what they believe in and the rights they are entitled to. On the contrary, it has motivated them to try even harder and gain these basic societal rights through determination and unity.
In 1848, in Seneca Falls, New York, 68 women and 32 men sat down at the first women’s rights convention to sign a Declaration of Sentiments to call for equal treatment of men and women under the law and voting rights for women (Imbornoni para 2). This is where feminism all began. From 1848 until 1920, many women, and even men, fought for the rights of women around the country. They fought for equality and liberty and in 1920, the 19th amendment was finally passed allowing women the right to vote (Imbornoni para 15). This was a major milestone in the women’s rights movement. Susan B. Anthony once said “Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.” (Susan B. Anthony para 1). If only feminism were the same today it wouldn’t be a bad connotation and would still be a positive movement. This is because many of those associated with feminism today no longer see the need for equality. Instead, it seems they are looking for superiority. Modern-day feminists in America do not see how well women are doing today, and they instead fight for justice for their victimhood that they still see themselves in. They also fight against the prominent wage gap claiming that women are being discriminated against in work place.
