The Author that I choose was David Sedaris, he is a humorist that writes stories that really happened to him or tales that he hears and thinks he could improve on them (“Sedaris Public Private Life”). Some of this essays are about a deeper topic like politics and he uses humor to help get his point across in a statement that is fun and enjoyable to read. (“Sedaris Public Private Life”). David Sedaris is not only a writer he also is a play writer, he has been a part on many different major plays and he also did one with his sister Amy Sedaris (“Sedaris Public Private Life”). What's interesting about the book is the way it circles around the loss of language and the question of Sedaris' own facility with writing (Brown). The importance of that sentence shows that he is not afraid for someone to question is facility. The reason that facility is very big point in the book “Me Talk Pretty One Day” is because Sedaris likes to write about stuff that really happened to him and people question if that was really the place he was in when he was in school. The book “Me Talk Pretty One Day” could be about him and if so he had an experience that readers like to keep reading about, for example, Despite the recurrent theme of inarticulate communication that permeates this collection, it's likely the reader will be the only one at a loss for words at its conclusion (Brown). A good author writes with a specific purpose. Many of them are very opinionated and controversial, calling out certain groups of people, or presenting readers with seemingly outlandish ideas. George Orwell says that he writes “to push the world in a certain direction, to alter other people’s idea of the kind of society that they should strive after.” His purpose is to persuade his readers to better themselves as well as society based on what he deems the correct approach. Erik Larson wrote “The Devil in the White City” to shine light on the infamous Gilded Age of America and the stark contrast, yet inevitable relatedness, of pride and evil. John Steinbeck was perhaps the best author of all time. He was the winner of a Nobel Prize, and among other accomplishments, Steinbeck published nineteen novels and made many movies during his lifetime. All of his experience and knowledge are shown through his novels. A reader can tell, just in reading a novel by Steinbeck, that he had been through a lot throughout his life. Also, Steinbeck worked very hard to accomplish everything that he did during his lifetime. Nothing came very easily to him, and he had to earn everything he owned. This helped him in his writing, because he was able to write about real people and real experiences. John Steinbeck got his inspiration from life experiences, people he knew, and places he had gone.
When a writer starts his work, most often than not, they think of ways they can catch their reader’s attention, but more importantly, how to awake emotions within them. They want to stand out from the rest and to do so, they must swim against the social trend that marks a specific society. That will make them significant; the way they write, how they make a reader feel, the specific way they write, and the devotion they have for their work. Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgard Allan Poe influenced significantly the American literary canon with their styles, themes, and forms, making them three important writers in America.
Frist off Richard Louv is a nonfiction author. The first book would be the Last Child in the Woods. The reason would be because he “spotlights alienation of children from the natural world”(Richard, 2016) As for second most famous writing would be The Nature Principle. The reason would be because it “identifies seven basic concepts that help us reshape our lives”(Richard, 2016)
All things considered, these three authors have divergent points of view, styles and approaches to literature. Of the three Anne Lamott stood out as the most assessable and relatable. A young ambitious writer would find no encouragement from Plato and no practical advice from Frye. The same young writer would find numerous useful bits of information and many inspiring thoughts in Anne Lamotts book. Only Plato could truly envision a world were literature does not exist.
Edgar Allan Poe is the author that I have chosen to write about. I have read The Raven, Annabel Lee, and a few other works of his. I like Edgar Allan Poe because he was a struggling writer that continued to write even when his writings did not bring him fame and fortune. After his death, his work became more popular with society. Now he is considered one of the classic writers of his era, with some of his works being included in a list of required readings for many schools. I find his work interesting because he wrote about dark and morbid things, that I greatly enjoy. Normally when I read poems, I do not understand what they are talking about. With Poe, his poems tell a story.
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by the pseudonym Mark Twain, has been central to American literature for over a century. His seemingly effortless diction accurately exemplified America’s southern culture. From his early experiences in journalism to his most famous fictional works, Twain has remained relevant to American writing as well as pop culture. His iconic works are timeless and have given inspiration the youth of America for decades. He distanced himself from formal writing and became one of the most celebrated humorists. Mark Twain’s use of the common vernacular set him apart from authors of his era giving his readers a sense of familiarity and emotional connection to his characters and himself.
As every well-read person knows, the background in which you grow up plays a huge role in how you write and your opinions. Fuller grew up with a very strict education, learning multiple classic languages before she was eight years old. Fern grew up with writers all throughout her family and had a traditional education and saw first hand the iniquities of what hard-working had to contend with. Through close analysis of their work, a reader can quickly find the connections between their tone, style, content, and purpose and their history of their lives and their educational upbringing.
Writing about any artist or author makes us more curious about the writer and his or her view of life. I believe every writer reflects his or her own perspective in their writings even if they did not talk about themselves; this will appear to the reader in one way or another.
Many argue, who is the greatest writer of their time? Names like Shakespeare often come up in these discussions. These types of writers are known for their beautiful styles of writing that draw in all readers to the story. However it is rare to find writers who can write like this but also effectively reflect who they are. Being able to take what is currently happening to them and then portray that through writing is a hard quality to find in writers. Ernest Hemingway effectively used his life lessons to increase the quality of his work. Starting at a young age, Hemingway way experienced many life changing events. Sigmund Freud is psychology’s most famous figure. He is also the most controversial and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. Freud’s work and theories helped to shape out views of childhood, memory, personality, sexuality, and therapy. Time Magazine referred to him as one of the most important thinkers of the last century. While his theories have been the subject of debate and controversy, his impact on culture, psychology, and therapy is cannot be denied.
Sexual orientation is the preferred term used when referring to an individual's physical and or emotional attraction to the same and or opposite sex. Heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual and pansexual are all sexual orientations. An individual's gender identity and expression is distinct from their sexual orientation. Throughout life as the individual explores the world around them, they are shaped by the unique experiences and influences that are imparted upon them. All people experience life subjectively therefore there is no monolithic way of viewing or defining one’s sexual identity, however, there are particular experiences that may shape and develop specific characteristics or tendencies that a group of people may share. Andrew Sullivan addresses this very issue in his 1995 book, Virtually Normal: An Argument about Homosexuality. In the prologue, titled “What is a Homosexual?” Sullivan ponders what exactly composes a homosexual life and why certain environmental factors are fundamental and exclusive to the homosexual experience. He sees self-control/subjugation as a crucial part of all human experience, however, he considers the homosexual (more broadly, the LGBTQ) experience to be unique in that early on they learn to make sexual/emotional distinctions out of a need for survival. They learn to function within the parameter of certain social rules in order to blend and eventually this becomes a sort of second nature that is hard to break.

His theories bring forth a new kind of thinking to the psychology world and show why we think them. It’s a way many don’t think but may put forth the reasoning to it. There are many though that think Freud was just another crazy psychologist that was on drugs. Though his many proofs behind his major theories such as: the conscious and unconscious mind, the Id, Ego, and Superego, psychosexual theory, and others as well, can prove why it wasn’t just a drug trip Freud was on.
