Edgar Allan Poe is the author that I have chosen to write about. I have read The Raven, Annabel Lee, and a few other works of his. I like Edgar Allan Poe because he was a struggling writer that continued to write even when his writings did not bring him fame and fortune. After his death, his work became more popular with society. Now he is considered one of the classic writers of his era, with some of his works being included in a list of required readings for many schools. I find his work interesting because he wrote about dark and morbid things, that I greatly enjoy. Normally when I read poems, I do not understand what they are talking about. With Poe, his poems tell a story.

He returned to the home of his biological father looking for relatives. He found an aunt by the name of Maria Clemm. She took Poe in and was like a second mother to him. His cousin Virginia used to take love letters to the lady he had his eyes on, until he started to like her. As Poe was living with his aunt Maria, Allan died and left him nothing. But he would be ok, because he had been writing short stories and was entered into a contest. One of his stories landed him a position with the Southern Living Messenger in Richmond. It only took Poe a year turn this magazine into the most popular magazine in the south.
In the magazine Poe wrote short stories and book reviews. He did not care who the author of a book was, he critiqued it. Since Poe was having success with his writings in the magazine, he moved his aunt and cousin to Richmond. Once they arrived Poe married his cousin, Virginia, who was only thirteen. This was very popular. Everyone wanted to read about his trip. Poe finally told them he never flew across the ocean. One year later Poe published his most famous work, The Raven. Poe then made a name for himself and could demand whatever pay he wanted for his speeches and lectures. By 1846 Poe left New York due to his wife getting worse and rumors of him having a relationship with a married woman. He moved out in the country away from the city.
