McMahon says that Americans should be happy,” in pursuing of Unhappiness,” we seek to bring one year to its natural happy conclusion... McMahon uses pathos, and logos to prove his point. In the 9th paragraph, he writes, “who have their minds fixed other things than their own happiness,but the happiness of others” he uses pathos as he speaks about happiness in when he says that people care about others than themselves he says, “their own” which makes the person feel that people don’t care about themselves as much as they think they do. The author uses appeals like happy New Year, Christmas and etc.
In Theodore Isaac Rubin’s essay, “Competition and Happiness”, he summits about how in today’s society its always the battle eat or be eaten. Therefore our parents always tried to get us involved at an early age to help with our self-development, well being, and health. Since our culture has made us believe that competition brings out the best of us. Yet, it simultaneously brings out a stressful, isolating, and paranoid ambiance at a very young age. I agree with Rubin’s notion since the use of our time and energy is determined by competition and limits our happiness because it weakens our sense of identity.
Stephen M. Schuller and Acacia C. Parks research shows that circumstantial factors do not adequately explain different level of happiness. Positive reactions will contribute to everyone’s happiness just as well as negative reactions do. I agree with Schuller and Parks when it comes down to where your happiness comes from. I believe your happiness comes from how you react to every situation in your life and how you let it affect your happiness. Burkeman is an author who is incredibly well educated on the subject of seeking happiness, has wrote multiple works (such as The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking) on the subject, and his stylistic approach of “present the goods, make them stay” in this particular article is both clever and monumentally effective. The use of the casual tone catches the reader’s attention better, simply because it’s ironic and is in a sense, odd to read. Every paper should accommodate a certain tone to fit the subject matter. If a research paper took on a casual tone, readers wouldn’t take the author seriously, however, Burkeman utilizes an indifferent tone not only to stay true to a theme of irony, but to make the reader stay and want more. This is further proven by his use of the Museum of Failed Products as his hook and his leading example as to why everybody should stop shunning their failures. Climatically, when he has the reader’s unfaltering attention, he presents the ‘why’ behind his seemingly crazy theory behind finding happiness. The society uses one’s happiness to seek their own. Starting with the ancient Adam Smith’s theory of a market economy where commodities are sold and bought in a market freely, where sellers and buyers exchange to achieve profit, and happiness is derived from profit. Thus “happiness is both produced and consumed” (Ahmed 3). Happiness is a matter of research for corporates of big companies. They try to figure out which product makes the buyers feel the happiness they need, so that they can produce more for their own profit. So, they cunningly make commercials with people having a good time. Which when watched by the buyers they get the false sense that their life would be so much better if they bought that small bottle of happiness. There are competitions all over the world. Everywhere we go, people are competing against one another. Does competition bring happiness to us or does it bring sadness? According to Theodor Isaac Rubin from “Competition and Happiness,” competition brings out the worst in people. Rubin states that competition was passed on to us through training and generations. Rubin believes that it creates a stressful and paranoid atmosphere that is contrasting to our peace of mind. Darrin broke out of the order of saying “Happy New Year!” and realized they are only expected words that are said without any meaning behind them. Even around the holidays where people are expected to be happy, they think the words “Happy New Year!” are just words that are supposed to be said. If you think about the words “Happy New Year”, year does not only mean one day, so the words are meant to wish a whole year of happiness. But instead, people just reserve their happiness only for the holidays. John Stuart Mill, Carlyle's long-time rival who are both philosophers makes a valid statement about those who have their focus set on something other than happiness are only happy. "The Futile Pursuit of Happiness" by Jon Gertner was published in September of 2003. It is an essay that discusses the difference between how happy we believe we will be with a particular outcome or decision, and how happy we actually are with the outcome. Even though he experienced how hard life can be he still pursued to reach his goals in his life for his son. This movie shows how a homeless person stand up and pursue to be successful.
I believe that happiness is the key to living a good and prosperous life. Through all of the sadness and hate in the world, happiness gives me hope. It gives not only me, but others hope and joy. Happiness gives us something to hold onto, therefore we cherish it as much as we can.
