Romeo and Juliet Essay Romeo and Juliet, a play by William Shakespeare, is about the tragedy of two lovers. The two lovers are from families that hate each other. Romeo is a Montague, whilst Juliet is a Capulet. Romeo had loved another girl, only to find she was to become a nun. He then went to a party hosted by the Capulets, and fell in love with Juliet. He met up with her, as she also liked him, and they eventually got married. Their happiness did not last long, however, as Tybalt, a man from Juliet’s house, killed Mercutio, a relative to the prince and Romeo’s friend. Juliet is longing for Romeo to come and consummate their marriage at night, which is when they can be together, as their relationship is too unnatural for them to meet at day, due to the hatred of their families. The word “night” in the line symbolizes darkness through night, creates a force consuming everything. But the word “mask” suggest light can therefore become hide through darkness, as a mask can endure to hide one’s self and one’s true intent. The words “mask of night” suggest deception through the veil of hate which consumes these two households. It additionally symbolizes the need for secrecy, as mask and night conceal one’s intent from others. Night represents hate therefore creating a mask of hate. A motif help explains the theme, it’s an reoccurring element to explain the central idea using images, sounds, ideas or words. William Shakespeare used many motifs in the story but I decide to choose light and dark. Light and dark is an reoccurring imagery to compare Romeo and Juliet’s love and romance. The light and dark imagery is brought up many times but used in slightly different ways to enhance different meanings.

Juliet mirrors Romeo’s joyous attitude when they are together, because she is elated by his presence, as he is by her’s because her “...true love is grown to such excess I cannot sum up sum of half my wealth”(Act. 2, Sc. 5, ln 35-36). Unfortunately, Juliet also mirrors Romeo’s darker emotions. As Romeo gazes upon what he believes to be Juliet’s corpse, his mindset turns dark, violent, and even desperate. “For fear of that I still will stay with thee And never from this palace of dim night Depart again. Here, here will I remain With worms that are thy chambermaids. O, here Will I set up my everlasting rest And shake the yoke of inauspicious stars”(Act. 5, Sc. 3, ln 109-115). As a result, he “[Drinks.] O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die [Falls]”(Act. 5, Sc. 3, ln 122-123). Throughout the play Shakespeare hints toward their tragic outcome. In addition we constantly see Juliet comparing good to bad when confronted with grief. Lastly, the ignorance of adolescent decision making is highlighted through their actions. Shakespeare uses light and dark as a motif to convey the theme that people cannot escape the inevitability of their fate.
