The film Morgan was created as a means of communicating the dangers of artificial intelligence as a cliffhanging thriller that catches the attention of millions of people. Morgan gives viewers a chance to preview the not-so-distant future regarding the concept of artificial intelligence. Although the film places a negative connotation on artificial intelligence, the audience is able to effectively formulate their own opinions on the use of artificially intelligent people and machines. The recurring theme within the movie is that artificial intelligence is extremely negative and will lead to uprisings among other people. Expert scientists believe that extreme intelligence, like the intelligence that Morgan possesses, can lead to superintelligence. According to Nick Bostrom, author of Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies, superintelligence can be defined as “any intellect that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains” (Bostrom). This essentially refers to an intelligent machine or a synthetic human having the capacity to know more information than all other people in the world combined. In the film, Morgan is the synthetic human that researchers in the real world fear. She acts as both a symbol and a method of foreshadowing because of the way she incorrectly acts. Morgan foreshadows an existential takeover of humans by intelligent machines and synthetic human beings. The viewers of the film are able to speculate on the possible future of the world as artificial intelligence continues to advance. Lee Weathers and all of corporate describe Morgan as being “it,” whereas all of Morgan’s creators describe her as being “her” (Scott). This is a significant point to make because it shows the disconnect between the creators themselves and the people that they are directly working for. Strong connections have been made when using the word “her,” compared to using the word “it” to describe something that you are unaware of. The creators have had the time to physically and mentally watch Morgan grow up and thrive, but corporate and Lee Weathers have not. The fact that somebody external [Weathers] is going into Morgan’s simulated environment can lead to anger and distrust among Morgan and the developers, and eventually leads to a bloody rampage. The choice of words and how people treat artificial intelligence is a very noteworthy piece of evidence in proving that artificial intelligence should always be regulated to ensure they are no threats put in place.
Films are utilized in many different ways to help portray messages without forcing the audience to agree with them. Morgan is victorious in effectively showing the dangers of artificial intelligence without pushing the belief that all aspects of artificial intelligence are negative.
