With the continuously growing populations and diversified demands on cross-cultural patient providing effective and culturally safe health care services would require culture assessments. Recognising a cultural identity, cultural values and beliefs takes up an important part on ever-greater needs for multicultural community within culturally diverse health care environment. Cultural value is a barometer of whether is right, wrong, acceptance and justice within specific society’s view. Each individual member of community has tendencies to show respect and follows normative values sanctioned in the culture group (Spencer, 2012). Living in cross cultural area has shown me the ways to accepting and comprehending diverse cultures of other immigrants from worldwide and Indigenous Australians. Working as an assistant nurse in Queensland health currently and worked as a personal carer on residential care setting for couple of years I come across numerous patients with different cultures. The thing I have leant through work history is that I should not have a prejudice on their culture particularly assuming by physical appearances and respect individuals’ cultures without biased view. As practicing nursing in ethnically diverse health care environment partial or one sided views can cause implications of supporting patient, which leads to patient’s low level of compliance to their health care consequently (Taylor, & Alfred, 2010, p.593-593). Another one major event that happened to me was throidectomy operation in adolescent period. These experiences encourage me to pursue career as a registered nurse and even further keep me motivated to achieve academic goal in university. Thus, I personally believe that these life experiences and willingness of perceiving new culture with open minded would be a stepping stone to become a culturally competent nurse and thereby I would be able to provide culturally sensitive care and assist to establish health care environment that optimises the cultural needs for diverse population.
