In the United States only 1% of the population serve in the military. Many people have a

general idea on what they do. However, they lack the ability to understand most cultural

differences between the two. The comparison of military culture to civilian exhibits military

culture to contain stronger life skills compared to civilians. One of the first things learned in

boot camp is discipline. No matter what type of background you come from, discipline is

demanded from every member of the armed forces. Secondly, they live by the core vales of

honor, courage and commitment. These values have been taught since 1775. Third, they have

a good work ethic. Employees with good work ethic bring balance to a company.

something that enhances individuals lives both during and after military life.

Civilian culture in respects to discipline is extremely lacking. Children in most

households rule the roost. Many parents don’t know the fine line between being the parent or

friend. This type of behavior in the military would cause one to get reprimanded. For example,

if someone talked back to a figure of authority they could face judicial punishment. This would

leave them loosing a whole paycheck and confined to their room for up to 30 days with the

exception of work. Civilians on the other hand would not seek such a harsh punishment. They

may choose the phrase agree to disagree and treat it like a debate. The military is lucky on

certain aspects the punishment may be harsh but at the end of the day they still have a job.

Civilians can be fired right on the spot and your just out of luck. In todays society being able to

determine your role is a life skill that most military members excel at over civilians.
