Dread. He knew where he was and what was happening. The pea slowly opened his eyes to the enveloping darkness that was all too familiar. He was trapped, once again, by the immense weight of 20 mattresses, 20 eider-down beds, a Princess and the guilt he carried because of what he would do in the next few hours. He would submit to the heavy black blanket of sleep, and then- wait, he thought to himself. I’m awake. The curse that the Witch had placed on him so long ago could only work if he was asleep. Every other time a woman had come to the old, massive, luxurious castle he lived in and claimed that she was a Princess, he; the pea, would be picked by the queen to be placed under the girl’s bed. If her statement was true, she would be bruised from the pea’s small form under the 40 beds she was forced to sleep on. Of course, due to the Witch, no Princess had ever slept in the dusty guest bedroom of the palace for long enough to be harmed, as the curse the pea bore made him scare the women …show more content…

How can I show her that I, a pea — unimportant, unnoticeable, unnecessary — can stand up for what’s right? He had observed the Witch for long enough to know what to do. Gently, he waved the wand and whispered the word ‘Pea’, and turned to see a swarm of the small green, round vegetables cascading down the hallway towards where he stood. He waved the wand once again. His heart was in his throat. The silence was deafening. Suddenly, a high-pitched shriek pierced the air. The pea desperately tried to see what was happening but he was blinded by an intense white light. Then- a sudden calm. The light slowly faded all that was left was a mattress. Now she’ll know what it feels like to be slept on, he thought bitterly to himself. The peas slowly lined themselves up underneath the newly formed mattress and rolled it away. He was about to go follow his pea friends when a loud knock startled
