Kevin Clarke, Gary Lee, and I illustrated great courage and an ability to face the challenge of reading and writing adversities, through different, creative, and proactive ways. The benefits of facing one’s adversity in reading and writing are better communication, understanding and providing directions, being informed, safeguarding against being taken advantage of by others, and for the mere progression of life. In addition, a person cannot be believed simply for their words, thus reading is beneficial to ensure those words conveyed represent fact and truth. In 2011, I watched a new television series. The new series aired on Showtime after a show called Dexter. The new series is known as Shameless. Shameless is based on the long running series, Shameless U.K. Shameless is the American take of the U.K. version. There is a lot cruder language, and nudity in the American version. The series focuses on the Gallagher family, and they live in Chicago, Illinois. The show refers to the Gallagher family living on the Southside, which is the “ghetto” of Illinois. Both Shameless U.S. and Shameless U.K. have similar character names and plots. In this paper, I will focus only on Shameless U.S.

My life, it has been one filled with many accomplishments, and yet it is also one that is tinged with hard times and struggles. Hence this has shaped who I am today and why I think I can succeed in the Leon S. Peters Honors program; because I believe our struggles shape our character, and who we will become. It leads us to our epiphany, our self-discovery of what we want to accomplish in life, and why we want to change the world for the better; this is the building block of what makes us human.

With all of the downfalls that I have experienced in my academic and personal life, a college education will make it possible for me to continue my journey into becoming a prestigious corporate lawyer. I have the drive for success and I am certain that with this scholarship I will be able to pay off my debt and help my mother with her own educational goals. Throughout the years, I hardly believed in my capabilities in school and in achieving my ambitions. You see I am not one of those cool kids who blatantly don’t want to do anything, in fact, I was worse. When opportunities decides to knock on my doorstep, I simply decline hoping that luck doesn’t go my way. It is because I was afraid to change my status which I was already comfortable with my life. As my high school career ends, I notice increasingly how much life that I have yet to live and the opportunities available to me in the years ahead. The past four years have been great preparation for my future endeavors, but college is the path leading to my full potential. In order to reach the end of this path, I utilize my most valuable trait—determination—to set short and long-term goals and achieve them. It is with this “can do” spirit—like the one my grandpa, a former Navy Seabee, evinces through his stories—that I have set my personal goals: to volunteer my time in service to others, further develop leadership skills through experiential learning, and excel at my school work no matter how challenging it may seem. Though these may be difficult to maintain, I have faith that my optimistic attitude will enable me to prevail over the challenges I am certain to face.
I want to see how far my efforts and endless curiosity will take me.
