Courage is a significant factor during the hero’s journey. It is an attribute that contributes to the completion of the hero’s journey while staying true to the hero’s principles. On a hero’s journey, it is because of the hero’s courage that the threshold is crossed. In the midst of Hiccup’s family reunion, he descends into his version of hell, where humans are using dragons as weapons. The hero must have courage to face the nightmares of the underworld. Instead of greeting the war with despair and grief, he bravely accepts reality and joins the battle to defend his mother’s home. During the battle, Hiccup tries to persuade Drago Bludvist to stop a meaningless conflict. Dictionary.com defines courage as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, or pain without fear”. Because of his courage, Hiccup dared to approach a treacherous, malicious man without fear or hesitation, believing in the good of humans, even though both his parents disagreed. Courage is strength during a time of grief. When a hypnotized Toothless killed Stoick, Hiccup knew the others were counting on him, and for that reason, he didn’t mourn his father. He wanted to cry the most, to lie down, scream, and give up. However, while the others were still shocked by Stoick’s death, Hiccup formulated a new plan to take down Drago Bludvist. He thought of something nobody would’ve expected, and found a way out of the mess they were in. His courage gave him the motivation he needed, the push to conquer the challenges directed at him. Courage is what heroes count on to outplay their enemies, to exceed limitations, to triumph. It is a quality that heroes must possess to withstand hell’s fierce flames, to beat the odds no matter
Courage is an act of sacrifice that allows you to face danger without showing fear. A time he showed courage was when he threw the first punch at the rumble between the Greasers and Socs. He threw the first punch for pride, he threw it for loyalty, but he was courageous while doing so. As Ponyboy stated on page 142, "... He was ashamed to be on our side..." It took a lot of courage to throw the first punch being on a side you were ashamed of being on. He was ashamed because the person he punched was what he could've been and that crushed Darry. It would take a lot of courage to look after two adolescent boys while they are growing up. Darry could've gone to college, become a national football player and have a better life than what he had. Darry instead sacrificed that to keep his brothers together after the death of their parents. If Sodapop and Ponyboy could stay together, Darry would've gone to college. Darry was incredibly courageous to give that up for his brothers.
Based on the Merriam Webster dictionary, courage is defined as the,“mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” In the play, the characters are tested and forced to make life or death decisions, with
...a of his "red badge" of cowardice known only to him, he earned his "red badge of courage." However, the necessity of a turn in character to create the final hero is still evidenced. By showing the close relationship between the negative and positive aspects of a single characteristic--in this case confronting battle with either courage or cowardice--Crane opens the door for an infinite understanding of what makes a hero by demonstrating that perfection is not a necessary characteristic.
It takes little character to point a gun and pull a trigger, but it takes mountains of courage to accept a challenge in which you are already defeated. Nothing to do but reverse fate, overturn the thoughts and predictions which stand looking down with a grin upon its face. This feat may be impossible, but not totally forsaken, for courage prevails over cowardice. Courage, bravery, selflessness, all attributes necessary for winners to possess.
Displaying acts of courage has the aptitude to make immense alteration to one’s personal integrity. Courage is seen as a virtue, and is a constantly repeated choice. The presence of courage is paramount to the actions of the characters throughout Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. “I wish none of this had happened.” (Frodo, LOTR:FOTR, Jackson), “So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” (Gandalf, LOTR:FOTR, Jackson). This moment which occurs early in the first film, elucidates the way courage is implemented throughout the films, where it must be found within the individual to consummate both colossal and trivial feats. The significance
Bravery is like a very trusted friend, it will never let you down. That statement holds true in the great epic of "Beowulf." "Beowulf" is the story of a great hero who comes to the aid of a troubled king. Beowulf hears that king Hrothgar is having trouble and immediately comes to help with no questions asked. he defeats the monster, Grendel, with his bare hands. Beowulf then defeats Grendel's mother along with a dragon until he is fatally injured. Bravery is a very admirable characteristic that few people possess.
Courage is an act, or thought of true bravery. The will to do something, something heroism is really focused on. Heroism is putting others first by throwing yourself into a mad fray of danger or chaos in order to save another’s life. Beowulf uses battle swords in every challenge he is confronted with such as Grendel, the mother of Grendel, as well as the dragon that began to attack Beowulf’s own people. Beowulf and his most trusted friend Wiglaf defeat the beast, although not without Beowulf being bitten by the beast first. Wiglaf sinks a sword in the dragon 's belly, but this still does not kill the dragon, but rather wounds. Beowulf, with what strength he had left, stabbed the dragon with a dagger and kills him once and for all. Beowulf proves yet another valiant move with the courage he possesses by continuing to fight even when he has little to nothing
“[Courage is] when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 149). In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, courage is an obvious overlapping theme that portrays radical, determined characters that have the willingness to defy common views. Likewise in The Help by Katheryn Stockett, the reader sees what happens when people persevere against the evils of society and take steps for the good of all. In both texts, the reader can see that courage is doing what is right without worry of the repercussions or opinions of others.
Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery (Dictionary). Throughout the Red Badge of Courage, Henry Fleming, a young farm boy who fought for the Union, went out on the battlefield and battled his way to victory with his fellow soldiers. Henry held a prodigious amount of courage throughout the Civil War. Fleming's courageous tasks eventually paid off, by being promoted to lead one of the last battles. The courageous defeats against the Confederate soldiers resulted to the end of the Civil War and the victorious Union soldiers who can now go home to their families. Henry's injuries, his role during the battles, his loneliness, and his survival tactics all have an immense impact on how Henry fought and lived throughout the course of the Civil War.
The ability to show courage is very important to be a hero. Courage means the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous, and being able to carry on in spite of danger
Without being courageous, a hero would be too scared to answer his or her adventure. Right after Theseus finds his father, he goes on a quest to kill the Minotaur and save the citizens that are going to be eaten. With great strength and courage, he finishes beating the terrible beast, “He came upon him asleep and fell upon him, pinning him to the ground; and with his fists - he had no other weapon - he battered the monster to death” (Hamilton 215). With his incredible strength, Theseus battles the powerful monster to its death without any kind of weapon, only bare hands. A human has to have enough courage and confidence to achieve this goal. Hercules was known as the greatest Greek hero of all time because of his courage and strength. Hercules even has the courage to go against Apollo by lot without any signs of being timid, “Apollo, of course, would not put up with this, but Hercules was perfectly willing to fight him and Zeus had to intervene” (Hamilton 225). A person, is courageous and confident enough that he thinks he is equal to god. The gods need him to fight the giants and he was not afraid to go against Apollo by having an oracle of his own. Zeus, the most powerful god and supreme god, has to interfere and stop the quarrel between them. Not only challenging one of the most powerful Gods, Hercules also has great courage to do the twelve labors. The twelve labors are impossible, and no mortals cannot achieve any of them, “There were twelve of them and each one was all but impossible”(Hamilton 231). A man that can take not only one, but twelve impossible challenges that makes himself clean from the murder of his wife and children needs a tremendous amount of courage to achieve these labors. Courage is always needed in a hero in order for that person to achieve his or her
Many people confuse courage for not being scared of what could happen, Franklin D. Roosevelt once said that “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important that fear.” Courage isn’t being able to act like nothing will scare you or make life more difficult, it’s the ability to realize that something will be difficult or scary and you overcome the difficulty. Courage is the ability to overcome hardship, not avoid it or create more of it to make yourself seem more
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
Muhammad Ali states, “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life”. What Ali is saying is, to be able to grow as a person, being courageous and taking different risks is vital to achieve different goals in life. In today’s society, people need to be more courageous so that they can grow to be better. The word “courage” comes from the Latin root “cor” which means heart. The definition of this word now and what the definition was back then have two completely different meanings. What it meant when the word originally came about meant to speak from the heart; while the word now correlates with gallant or brave.
