Slavery was a big thing back then. Nobody ever knew that it was bad until it really actually happened and once they found out about they were scared to death. Today I am going to be talking about slavery and tell you some research I have found out about him working at the cotton plantation. Did you know that in the 1860 there was over 60% of slaves that worked at the cotton plantation? If you think that's not a lot, then you're wrong because in 1860 there was over 4 million slaves and about 60% of them were working at the same place. Have you ever heard of the cotton plantation? He started working on a plantation in South Carolina. He thought that the job would be easy, but when he started he realized that he was going to get a lack of sleep. They got a lack of sleep because every morning they would get up at 7am and start work till around 11 that night. There sleeping situation was rough because everybody had to sleep on the ground on the cold wet grass, they only had one blanket for each slave, and they were not very warm to sleep with. In our history book I have found that most of the slaves usually work in a farm or at a plantation. Slaves get punishments for not doing what they are supposed to be doing which they are supposed to be working. Harry Mcmillan has actually had some punishments done to him like whipping, and he said that sometimes they would dig up a hole in the ground and put you down there for months or until some people die. During American colonization, the economy of the south became predominantly dependent on the tobacco plant. As the south continued to develop, they shifted their focus to cotton. Indentured servants as well as African slaves were used for these labor-intensive crops because their labor was decent and cheap (Shi and Tindall 39). Young British men were promised a life of freedom in America if they agreed to an exchange between a free voyage and labor for a fixed number of years. Many willing, able-bodied, and young men signed up with the hopes of establishing a bright future for themselves in America. Unbeknownst to them, indentured servitude was not as easy as it was made out to be. Many servants endured far worse experiences than they had ever imagined. The physical and emotional conditions they faced were horrible, their masters overworked them, and many had to do unprofessional work instead of work that enabled them to use their own personal skills. Young British men felt that because they faced such horrible circumstances, the exchange between a free voyage to America in exchange for servitude was not a proper trade.
During the period of time between 1789 and 1840, there were a lot of major changes occurring on the issue of slavery such as the impact it had towards the economy and the status of slaves in general. There were two types of African Americans slaves during the era, either doing hard cheap labor in a plantation usually owned by a white and being enslaved, or free. Undoubtedly, the enslaved African Americans worked vigorously receiving minimal pay, while on the other hand, the free ones had quite a different lifestyle. The free ones had more freedom, money, land/power, are healthier, younger and some even own plantations. In addition, in 1820 the Missouri compromise took into effect, which made it so states North of the 36°30′ parallel would be free and South would be slave and helped give way to new laws regarding the issue of slavery.

Even though slavery was “abolished” from the United States as well as the whole world, the fields were still short many workers and machinery, which in return made most of the labor to be done by hand. The author goes on to describe antebellum slavery. During this time he describes slavery as a massive expansion. He expresses this knowledge through numbers of slaves and overwhelming facts. At this time cotton boosted the economy of all the slave states, cotton producing or not. Cotton created an intense demand for slave labor and therefore slave prices rose to an all time high. Slave trading was very traumatic for the slaves, being separated from the only thing they knew. Some lived on plantations under a watchful eye and others worked right beside their owners. Slaves on large plantations usually worked in gangs, and there were better positions to work then others. Some gangs were separated into groups of lighter work, consisting of men and woman. Other gangs weren't so lucky and were assigned to hard labor.
Instead of convincing American citizens from around the country that slavery was America’s largest injustice, he now was persuading people in the government and people who were originally anti-slavery, that black men should have equal citizenship and the right to vote. His change in audience is another reason that the abolitionist voice changed beginning in the mid 1860’s. The harsh and passionate rhetoric he was using to condemn slavery may not have been so effective or persuasive to politicians. Therefore, it was in his best interest to change the approach he originally was making.
Which truly is a horrible punishment, comparing to the convicts there had been some boundaries that were made for their punishment. Since the beginning of slavery in the America, Africans have been deemed inferior to the whites whom exploited the Atlantic slave trade. Africans were exported and shipped in droves to the Americas for the sole purpose of enriching the lives of other races with slave labor. These Africans were sold like livestock and forced into a life of servitude once they became the “property” of others. As the United States expanded westward, the desire to cultivate new land increased the need for more slaves. The treatment of slaves was dependent upon the region because different crops required differing needs for cultivation. Slaves in the Cotton South, concluded traveler Frederick Law Olmsted, worked “much harder and more unremittingly” than those in the tobacco regions.1 Since the birth of America and throughout its expansion, African Americans have been fighting an uphill battle to achieve freedom and some semblance of equality. While African Americans were confronted with their inferior status during the domestic slave trade, when performing their tasks, and even after they were set free, they still made great strides in their quest for equality during the nineteenth century.

By taking away any opportunity for a better life, slave holders controlled every aspect of a slave’s life. However, after some education, Frederick longed for a life out of slavery. He realized he not only had to have a sound mind, but also a sound body and soul. The will to leave his old life behind was as important to education in obtaining his freedom. Frederick had many experiences that coincided with the average life of a southern slave during his time in captivity. However, after his escape, his life was very different from slaves who had obtained freedom by some means. Frederick Douglass became one the most prominent men in his time due to his hard work and determination he gained from being a slave.
Along with culture, food, and people, Louisiana offers many historic attractions. Plantation homes have been apart of Louisiana’s unique culture since the late 1700’s. Many wealthy people migrated from the north to the south to make a profit by farming. These owners bought slaves to do various activities such as picking cotton or farming. Slaves lived on plantations in slave homes where they remained for the rest of their life or if they could work enough to pay for their freedom. Many know that these plantation homes were built for farming tobacco and other cash crops such as rice and indigo, but most do not know the history and who built them. Jennifer Thompson-Cannino was raped at knife point in her apartment. She was able to escape and identify Ronald Cotton as her attacker. The detective conducting the lineup told Jennifer that she had done great, confirming to her that she had chosen the right suspect. Eleven years later, DNA evidence proved that the man Jennifer Identified, Ronald Cotton was innocent and wrongfully convicted. Instead, Bobby Poole was the real perpetrator. Sadly, there are many other cases of erroneous convictions. Some slaves worked as skilled laborers in cities or towns. The slaves belonged to different social or slave classes depending on their location. The treatment of the slaves was also a variable that changed greatly, depending on the following locations: city, town or rural.
A graduate from Yale University had thoughts of becoming a lawyer, but he needed a job urgently. After a tutoring job fell through, he accepted a position on a plantation in Georgia. His employer, Catherine Green, saw much talent in him and encouraged him to find a way to make cotton profitable. He promptly began working on a solution to the problem of separating the seeds from the cotton. On March 14, 1794, Eli Whitney was granted a patent for the cotton gin.1 The cotton gin impacted American industry and slavery changing the course of American history.
