Communication and organization are one of the most important aspects of a business. Many companies have to be able to communicate with the employers and other co-workers in order to maintain a healthy work environment. Business needs to have the ability to organize and have the authority to control their environment. Controlling the environment allows the business to be safe and productive. Humans have many different ways of communicating with each other. All business need to understand the different aspects of connecting with one another. Most people belong to an informal group that reflects their personality. Schools is a great example of an environment that has informal groups. Students who are able to accomplish straight A’s and take all honors classes often times form their own groups. Many people would label them as, “nerds.” Informal groups need to have a certain criteria that has to meet in order to belong to that particular group, this is called, “group conformity.” Group conformity is what is acceptable and what isn't acceptable in a group. People who have a common interest will pick which group they want to be in. In a work environment area, informal groups “affect the productivity, the morale of other employees, and the success of managers” (page 323). Often times informal groups are developed when employees working close together. Employees can have a lot of influence amongst other workers and managers. Sometimes employees, “band together to share fears or complaints. In such cases informal groups work against organizational goals”(323). There have been studies showing that informal groups can have an immense amount of power and influence. Understanding informal groups is crucial for a successful business work environment.
