Starting with narrator’s disapproval of Panos’ imminent infidelity, Ben Greenman’s “Ambivalence” presents readers with a protagonist bathed in conflicting emotions. Throughout his story, Greenman shows the futility of trying to bring emotion down to single understanding and origin of conformity because of that. Societal expectation of rigid standard of love creates tension. Panos possibly loves his future wife, otherwise he wouldn’t have wanted to get married but that love is insufficient; insufficient to get married at least. He is trying conform to the standards set by society but he fails to do so and thus cheats on his future wife. Not only has Panos had multiple affairs but he is also a bit hypocritical. He found the skinny girl dating an older guy an atrocity (1). He even went on to compare the event with “Bombing Cambodia”(1) while he himself cheated on his future wife with little regret. Still readers can understand Panos’ struggle with his own emotions. He tries his best to conform. He pushes himself to make decisions. He possibly tries to direct the conversation with the skinny girl towards Zimmerman code () because somewhere in his mind he does not want to betray his would be wife. Maybe Panos is like that man in the painting. Even the skinny girl points out that Panos gets her thinking about her father (3), the man on whom the painting is based. When someone first sees the painting, they see a “man trying to capture the bird” (2), similarly when reader first reads this story they see a story about a man cheating on his wife and they see the wife as a victim. But as the skinny girl points out “But the bird’s not an unwitting victim. He sees the man. You can be sure about that”, maybe Panos’ future wife is not an unwitting victim after all.
