Conflict Theory is stigmatized as an attempt by sociologist, to show patterns of social inequality in society. Characterizing some societal members behaviors, as those only out to further their own interest, at others expense. These unequal measures ignite the conflict between groups and individuals within society, whom have to compete for resources. This constant conflict between such classes (i.e. poor vs. well-off) can be used to understand “conflict” as a concept of social life. Commonly defined as many interactions, whether negative or positive between a group, party, or even individuals. In The Functions of Social Conflict, Coser positions: “Conflict within a group . . . may help to establish unity or to reestablish …show more content…

When conflict is created, the clash between groups within individuals can signify boundaries after the conflict has settled. Simmel believed that we only had to deal with common conflict because we have to. He explains his reasoning, “If we had not power and right to oppose tyranny and obstinacy, caprice, and tactlessness, we could not endure relations with people who betray such characteristics” (Simmel 1904:493). We go through these positive and negative conflicts on a daily basis and if we couldn’t endure such conflict, then it wouldn’t happen. In Simmels scope of Conflict Theory, there are two sets of man in regards to “society”. There is an individual and individuals that make up a society. This concept of conflict revisits the idea of the competition for resources. Resources needed for subtle survival are obtainable for the elite through the poorer class; while this class suffers at the bottom. Though both can relate Conflict Theory in the same scope, Cower notes flaws in Simmel’s research. Stating that Simmel doesn’t mention the fact that there are other ways besides conflict that can access similar functions of releasing tension.
