CONCEPT 6: FAMILY HEALTH NURSING
This concept is taken from module 6 of block 2 entitled “introduction to Public Health Nursing.
6.1: Significance of the Concept
Family is the unit of all services in all community health nursing programmes. The health of our members affect the welfare of other members in the community. This family health nurse optimize the health and well-being of children, women, and families in a changing multicultural society through nursing programs of teaching, research and practice as well as through community service (article online 2015). Family helath nursing is directed at familie whose members are both healthy and ill, and is being offered in settings in which individuals present with physiologie or psychological problems. In rendering this care, consideration of the relationships between and among family members is very important. It is being influenced by any change in its members. The nurse must manipulate the environment to increase the likehood of family interaction rembering that a person in a family with most symptom may change over time. The nurse must focus on the strengths of individual family members. Family health nursing service, should be realistic in terms of resources available. Health education, guidance and supervision are core parts of family health nursing (Oluh, 2007). Effective system of record and report of family health nursing service is very essential periodic and continuous appraisal and evaluation of family health situation and health services are basic to family health situation (Olise, 2007). Family Health nursing is rendered to all families without any dissemination. Also, advice, opimous or recommendations should come only after a thorough assessment. Health care effectiveness is improved when emphasis is placed on the family. Promotion maintenance and restoration of the health of families is important to the survival of society. The illness of a member of a family can have a traumatic effect on both other members of the family and the society in general. The philosophy of family health nursing is grounded on several principles that revolve around the control idea that the family is the constant in every society. Parents are experts in their child’s care and know more about their child’s care and know more about their child than can be ever be learned through assessments or charts (Joan et al 2010). Working together parents and health care workers can make more personal and informed decisions regarding what the best treatment is for a member of the family. Family health care nursing affords parents and members of the family opportunity to receive support and encouragement that the old philosophy of care
Using nursing strategies that are unique for each family based on their individual genetic and genomic variations is fairly new in the area of nursing (Munro, 2014) and interventions for this family should be tailored to helping them keep up on current information about heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, which are the main medical issues in their family medical history, and having a plan that ensures they continue getting regular health checkups.

The majority of our society holds the notion that nurses are no more than trained professionals, working for a doctor, who simply provide medical care for the sick and informed. However, what nursing means to me goes deeper than that belief. Nursing is a profession in which individuals are responsible for not only the care of the sick and infirmed but are also responsible for being a support system and an educator, as well as an advocate for the promotion of optimal care. In today’s society, nurses are an important part of any medical facility’s investment. This paper will address the many different aspects of nursing in which nurse’s act as not only caregivers but also act as, counselors and educators.
This week we were assigned to assess the Perez Family, this assessment was tailored towards exploring the family’s dynamic and our thoughts on how we as nurses could improve their developmental outcomes. The Perez’s have a three- generational family form, which consist of married twenty somethings, a young and growing family, and grandmother all living under one roof. This family is in multiple stages of development that further the stresses in their daily lives. Although the case study does not mention how long the “main characters” Maria and her husband Jamie have been married, because of their age it is safe to assume that they are newly married. The Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) is a well-known comprehensive and multidimensional template used by nurses to assess families. CFAM begins by having the nurse visit with the family and gain insight on the family’s functioning at a particular point in time. Interviewing the family allows the nurse to assess and identify potential issues. Furthermore, the CFAM consists of three main assessment categories, known as structural, developmental, and functional. Each of these categories contains several subcategories that allow the nurse to examine all aspects of a family’s functioning. The goal of the CFAM is for the nurse to openly discuss family issues, provide insight to families from an outside perspective and guide them towards their own problem solving tactics. CFAM allows families and nurse to develop a plan of care that is mutually agreed upon. The following paper illustrates a family assessment completed using the CFAM and applies nursing diagnoses and interventions relevant to the family’s current issues (Wright & Leahey, 2013).
Two potential barriers to the Patient-Family Centered Care model are time and patient/family expectations. Nursing is a demanding job that is known for it's fast paced and often hectic environment. While caring for several patients at a time, it might be difficult to make time to discuss and involve patients and their family in all aspects of their care. This could lead to the patient/family feeling left out or even lead to fear about why information if being kept from them. To address this barrier I will set aside time to spend with each of my patients solely dedicated to discussion about the care they are receiving as well as provide an opportunity to voice questions and concerns.

The key to a successful healthcare reform is interdisciplinary collaboration between Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) and physicians. Nursing theories are essential to effective and efficient nursing practice. The use of nursing theories has, and continues, to contribute to the development of nursing knowledge and its practice (Ahmed, 2001). Integrating these theories into practice provides guidance in achieving the goals of health promotion and disease prevention (Ahmed, 2001). The middle range nursing theory of Family Stress and Adaptation by Geri LoBiondo-Wood, requires nurses to understand the various processes and stages of the illness and the illness experience. Nurses must also understand that a family’s experience of stress, crisis, adjustment and adaptation is an ongoing and dynamic process (Smith & Liehr, 2008).

For the priority concern of the family’s ability to cope and their risk of depression commendation and interventative questioning were the chosen interventions. For the priority concern of Gilberts care giver burnout and risk for compassion fatigue commendation and encouraging respite were chosen. The Grape family is a fitting example of the complex difficulties a family can have when they are faced with the difficulty of dealing with a chronic illness and tragedy. This paper demonstrates the importance of assessing and creating interventions for a family in a way which includes every member of the family not only the ones with complications. Raising the question should patients who are suffering from chronic illnesses better off to be treated as an individual or as a member of a functional family unit?
My vision for the Family Nurse Practitioner in a primary healthcare setting is to bring health care to small communities, comprised of predominately poor working class people, who are classified as underprivileged. Performing exams on the sick, providing immunizations to the young, educating all, and assisting the elderly with chronic illness and disease management, while providing preventative care and education on wellness. The Family Nurse Practitioner sees patients from young to old in need of a wide variety of care. As a Family Nurse Practitioner I will provide education and holistically meet the health care and wellness needs of my community, and others like it, by providing critical access to health care for the most vulnerable

In health care, there are many different approaches throughout the field of nursing. When considering the field of family nursing, there are four different approaches to caring for patients. This paper will discuss the different approaches along with a scenario that covers that approach. The approaches that will be discussed include family as a context, family as a client, family as a system, and family as a component to society. Family health assessment is a process of getting information from the family about health promotion and disease-prevention activities. Family assessment includes nurse’s perceptions about family constitution, norms, standards, theoretical knowledge, and communication abilities. Marjorie Gordon (1987) proposed eleven functional health patterns as a guide for establishing a comprehensive nursing data base.
